ESGI (European Study Group with Industry) is Europe's leading workshop bringing together mathematicians and industrial companies. These week-long workshops have been held annually since 1968 and were previously known as the Oxford Study Groups with Industry, where they attracted leading mathematicians to work on industrial problems. See the following link, for information on previous editions.
The European Study Groups with Industry are a well-established and cost-effective way to make real progress on pressing challenges. Companies submit mathematical problems for the study group to solve; often in the form of a modelling problem or an optimization problem. Participants work in groups around each problem, presenting the results of their efforts to industry at the end of the week. A written report on each problem is later produced and given to the companies.
The ESGIs are an activity of the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI)
Almost all industrial problems have some mathematical aspect to them, although the mathematics is not always recognisable at first. Indeed, from our own experience, some of the most successful study group problems were not well-defined in mathematical terminology at the start of the study group. The fee for a firm to present a problem at the study group is 25.000 DKK. If you are interested in discussing a potential problem, feel free to contact the organizers using the mail ESGI25@math.aau.dk
Academic staff, research fellows and postgraduate students (see the following link for information regarding ECTS points for participation) are invited to participate in the workshop and come up with new ideas and potential solutions for real challenges. Participation and accommodation at Danhostel are free for all academic participants.
