Hackathons are an intense event where coders team up to solve problems using technology. The main purpose of a hackathon is to drive rapid innovation by bringing people together to solve real world problems in a short amount of time, which also helps improve your technical skills in the process.
A. Startup hackathon event (Presentation)
The classic, team-based hackathon focused on problem-solving and creativity! Teams will collaborate over 2 weeks to design and build a working prototype that links to the theme provided. The event concludes with a live presentation and pitch to a panel of judges, where teams must explain their vision, design and technical execution. See the criteria below for more details.
Teams: 2-5 people
Divisions: Junior & Senior
Dates: 19/09 - 03/10 (2 weeks to get coding...!)
B. Traditional Speed coding challenge (Timed)
This is a fast-paced competition with high stakes, focused purely on programming skills and speed. Participants are given a specific set of real-world challenges to solve within a strict time limit. Competitors are judged on code accuracy, efficiency and how quickly they can submit correct solutions. See below for criteria.
Teams: 2-5 people
Divisions: Junior & Senior
Date: 03/10 (No prep needed)
Your division is based on your skill level and confidence in coding. Please read the descriptions below and select the division that best matches your experience.
Junior (Year 7-10): You are relatively new to text-based coding. Your background includes little to no coding or just writing basic logic scripts (e.g. if/else statements and loops in Python)
Senior (Year 11-13): You are a fluent coder and comfortable with text-based coding. You have hands-on experience building your own small projects (e.g. simple websites and interactive games)
Keep in mind that your division is determined by the oldest member of your team. For example, if your team has three Year 9 students and one Year 11 student, your team must compete in the Senior Division.
