Saudi Arabia ranks as the 14th largest country by landmass, covering a vast area of 2 million square kilometers. Yet, 95 percent of this kingdom is a hot, dry desert filled with sand! It's one of the rare countries without any permanent rivers. On average, the country receives less than 150 millimeters of rainfall annually. But if you take a closer look, you’ll find something surprising—arable land! Farmlands in Saudi Arabia stand out in the desert, enabling farmers to grow a variety of fruits. Most of these farmlands are circular in shape. The total fertile land spans 35,000 square kilometers—more than three times the size of Qatar. Back in the 1960s, Saudi Arabia had only 400 square kilometers of fertile land. So how did the country's farmland expand so rapidly? This video explains how Saudi Arabia transforms desert into farmland. Interestingly, there were fewer sand dunes in ancient times. About 10,000 years ago, the region experienced increased rainfall, lakes, and greenery, which supported human settlements. Over the millennia, however, droughts severely damaged the environment.
