I had some old PC parts that wouldn’t work for no obvious reason. When I took it apart, I found the issue—the PSU was set to 240V instead of 115V. After fixing it, the PC ran fine, so I turned it into a server.
CPU: AMD FX 8350 8 Core processor
RAM: 16GB mismatched DDR3
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 EVO 2
GPU: AMD HD 5850
For most of the parts, I didn't have an option for what to pick, I just used what I had on hand. The 8 core CPU is great for this build for its high clock speed (4-4.2 GHz) and sufficient number of cores. My RAM is 2 8GB sticks of DDR3 RAM, from different manufacturers. I took one of the sticks from another motherboard that I am not using anymore. The motherboard was just one that I happened to have on hand, with the CPU in it. It does not have any display outputs so I had to put a crappy GPU in essentially just to use as a temporary display adapter.
I am going to set up a NAS on this computer, a Minecraft server, and I am going to keep a couple of my discord bots up full time.
