Television Show Background
I recently have been watching the 1960's television reruns of the show Bewitched. Bewitched is a show about a woman, who happens to be a witch, named Samantha who meets and falls in love with a mortal man named Darrin. They eventually marry, and Samantha ends up telling her husband (on their honeymoon) that she is a witch. The entire show is about how Samantha tries to live a ordinary life as a housewife without resorting to witchcraft (at the request of her husband).

Episode Discussion
In Season 1, Episode 3, Darrin invites an important client Rex Barker to his home for a dinner party in hopes to get a signed contract. The show begins with Samantha preparing a lavish meal for the party guests. She receives a call from Darrin informing her that Barker is adding a last minute guest. Being the submissive obedient wife, she assures Darrin that an additional guest is no problem at all.
Barker Makes His Move
While mingling with guests, Darrin makes casual conversation with Barkers date, while Barker and Darrin's boss hit the bar for another drink. Everyone is having a great time, and praising Samantha's efforts as host. Barker eventually finds Samantha alone outside in the gazebo removing empty glasses and emptying cigarette trays. He makes unwanted advances toward her, which she attempts to thwart off by reminding him that she is married to Darrin, and that he would be very jealous. Barker could care less. He continues to grab at her, trying to get in close enough to possibly kiss her, when Samantha has had enough. She hears Darrin calling for her as he was approaching, so Samantha decides her only option is to turn Barker into a dog. When Darrin finally comes alongside her, she implies that the dog is a stray that somehow made his way into their backyard through an open gate. Darrin convinces her to leave the dog outside until after the party guests had all left for the evening. As Samantha and Darrin head toward bed, the dog is wildly barking from their patio. Samantha convinces Darrin to let the dog in for the night. As they were preparing for bed, Darrin insisted the dog go back outside. Samantha decided to come clean with the details of why she had turned Barker into a dog. Darrin was furious at her for possibly ruining his business deal by turning Barker into a dog. He was also angry that she should've known how to handle a drunk man making advances on her. Since all housewives know how to do that. Samantha was furious with Darrin that he was not coming to her defense for fighting off unwanted advances by his client. Darrin was told to sleep downstairs for the night, and to take Barker with him. Frustrated and irritated, Darrin and Barker sleep downstairs in the study until a cat (that Samantha's mother sent to distract the dog with) and dog chase resulted in Barker running out the back gate and down the street.
Though this situation involves characters in a television show, and not an Ad, Kilbourne's "Two Ways a Woman can get Hurt" applies in two areas. Throughout history men have had this implied interpretation through media and social settings that "No" doesn't really mean "No". "Men are also encouraged to never take no for an answer. Ad after ad implies that girls and woman don't really mean "no" when they say it, that women are only teasing when they resist men's advances." (Kilbourne p. 492)
The second being that "All women are vulnerable in a culture in which there is such widespread objectification of women's bodies, such glorification of disconnection, so much violence against women, and such blaming of the victim." (Kilbourne p. 504)
Barker Get's Muzzled
Before the end of the episode, Samantha brings Barker back to Darrin's office in time for their scheduled meeting. By this point she has turned him back to a man. Samantha is waiting for Darrin in his office, when Barker tells Darrin he needs a drink. Barker finds Samantha in the office. After making his drink he goes to sit by Samantha on the couch. Where he begins making unwanted advances once more. Darrin walks in and sees Barker acting inappropriately, Darrin pulls Barker up and clocks him.

In Conclusion
Unlike real life, everything worked out perfectly. Darrin apologized to Samantha, and they were fine again. Barker ended up giving him the contract, and apologized for his behavior towards Samantha. Even though this show was made 57 years ago some of what Kilbourne said in her article still holds true to this day. Men need to learn "No" means "No" and women should not feel bad for being a victim.
