Want to get ahead of your fellow nursing, PA and medical school students? Working as a ER Scribe, you will personally work one-on-one with an Emergency Physician or Physician Assistant functioning as their personal assistant. The scribe's role is to increase efficiency by lessening the burden of documentation and organizational responsibility. By directly assisting the providers, the scribe allows for greater patient care and higher physician efficiency. Scribing is second-to-none for direct exposure to emergency medicine, disease processes, medical decision-making, and emergency medical procedures. Because scribes work alongside providers, the potential to gain knowledge is virtually limitless, dependent only on their motivation to learn. Though the work is intense, the experience is invaluable and full of excitement.
Our tight-knit scribe program provides the same training and clinical experience as big scribe companies do, but offers a great opportunity to connect with ED staff (nurses, PAs, and Physicians) and build close working relationships.
Our Chief Scribes are recent college graduates who understand your busy schedule and many responsibilities. Therefore, we provide a flexible schedule with no minimum number of shifts per month.
Our extensive training provides you with the knowledge to not only succeed as an ER Scribe, but to also start thinking as a provider with every patient you see.
Our program offers free monthly medical education lectures to our scribes, held by an ER physician, to help them learn and prepare for their future in medicine.
Our only requirements here at GEM Emergency Medical Group is a 1.5 year commitment to our program and an immediate/near-immediate start date.
Like most scribe companies, we do have a required commitment to GEM Medical Emergency Group. Because the hospital credentialing process and training can take a few months, we require our scribes to commit a minimum of 1.5 years to our program.
Our other requirement is having an immediate/near immediate start date. Training/credentialing a scribe can take a few months, thus we ask our scribes to have an immediate/near-immediate start date so we can get started on those processes.
Start your path to a career in medicine! GEM Emergency Medical Group regularly hires intelligent, friendly, and responsible individuals, who are able to handle a fast-paced environment of the ER. If we are not hiring at the moment, check back soon as we hire frequently.
Every shift, our scribes are provided with N95 masks. Our COVID-19 positive or potential COVID-19 patients are placed in our isolation room, where scribes are not required to enter. At times when the isolation room is occupied, COVID-19 patients are placed in a tent outside, where scribes are also not required to enter. If we are overflowing with COVID-19 patients and they do have to come into the ER, scribes are not required to go see them. For all the patients you are not required to see, the doctor or PA will tell you all the information you'll need to be able to chart. Once they are admitted or discharged, the bed they occupied is sanitized by the cleaning personnel.
Although certifications such as Medical Assistant (MA), Basic Life Support (BLS), etc. are useful as an ER Scribe, there are no certifications required for our ER Scribe positions as you will undergo rigorous on-the-job training.
Once interview invitations have been sent out, interviewees must confirm their interview time before the deadline. Interviews will take place over Zoom and will last approximately 30-45 minutes. Please dress appropriately and be prepared as we will be testing you on medical terminology and you will also be asked to do a typing test. A medical terminology quizlet will be sent along with the interview offer to allow our interviewees enough time to prepare.
We expect our new-hire scribes to start the training and the hiring paperwork process immediately after we send out job offers. Scribes are expected to start independent shifts after completing hiring paperwork, medical clearance, classroom training, floor training shifts, and being cleared to work by the chief scribes which takes approximately 1.5 months in total.
Here at GEM Emergency Medical Group, we offer a wide variety of shift times, including:

Please keep in mind, we do not offer all these shifts every day. Shift times vary, depending on which medical provider is working, and the day of the week.
We send out a monthly schedule, but shifts are not consistent. When scheduling, we do try and keep everyones schedule as consistent as possible, but there is no guarantee as providers working and shift times vary.
Our scribes submit their availability by the 15th of every month. A few days after Availability Forms are due, the official Scribe Schedule is published for all scribes to view
We are constantly hiring new scribes to replace ones who are leaving for graduate school, and this includes the Site Lead Scribes and Regional Chief Scribes. Regarding opportunity for growth, if one of the Site Lead or Regional Chief Scribes were to leave and if we decide we would like a replacement, there is the possibility that a scribe may be offered the position.
Our scribe program hires multiple times per year, but we do not have a set schedule as to when we will be hiring next. We suggest checking back monthly or bi-weekly to see if our ER Scribe Application has opened up. You can also sign up for our email list, to be notified when a position opens up!
We ask that our scribes wear scrubs (any color is okay) along with closed-toe shoes in the ED. Scrubs are not provided to our scribes.
Please allow us one week from the ER Scribe Application due date to get back to you. ER Scribe Application due date is posted in the job description after clicking the "ER Scribe Application" button.
