You'll need a timer or stopwatch time the intervals of our training plan. While you are welcomed to use your favorite, if you don’t already have a one, the Tabata Timer and HIIT Timer app works well for our purposes.
The Tabata Timer and HIIT Timer app is downloadable to mobile devices: via Apple App Store and via Google Play. Since both paid and free versions exist, be sure to check that you are downloading the intended version.
Once you have downloaded the app, you can set up your workout intervals as follows:
Locate the timer icon on your phone’s home screen and open it.
If you’ re not on the Settings screen, tap on the Gear (⚙) icon at the bottom right to get there.
Tap Initial Countdown and set to 5 seconds, then tap the return arrow (←) at the top left to return to the Settings screen
Tap Warmup Interval and set to 3 minutes, then tap the return arrow (←) to go back to Settings
Tap Exercise Interval and set to amount specified in Timing Parameters, then tap the return arrow (←) to return to Settings
Tap Rest Interval and set to amount specified in Timing Parameters, then tap the return arrow (←) to return to Settings
Tap Number of Sets and set to number of repeats specified in Timing Parameters, then tap the return arrow (←) to return to Settings
Notes:
The Halfway Beep is helpful when turning around halfway through an interval. It is located it under the Sounds section.
Avoid poorly timed ads by preemptively starting the timer after changing your Settings. Once you edit your settings, the free version of the Tabata Timer will force you view an ad once you start your timer. This can be problematic if you are trying to synchronize your start with others. So, get it over with as soon as you editing your settings before attempting to coordinate starting with others.
When you’re finished setting the intervals for your workout, press the checkmark(✓) at top left of the Settings screen and you will see Press Play To Start. From there, tap the Play (>) button at the bottom left and off you go! Every week, you just need to update the settings with the new workout. Be aware that the free version will force you to view and ad once you hit Play after updating your settings (See note below).
Notes:
Avoid poorly timed ads by preemptively starting the timer after changing your Settings. With the FREE version, you'll be forced to view an advertisement once you hit play after settings have changed. This can be problematic if you are trying to synchronize your start with others (e.g. volunteers). So, get it over with well before you start the workout. Hit play immediately after changing your settings.
Troubleshooting: the Pause ⏸️, Rewind ⏪️, and Fast Forward ⏩️ buttons at the bottom of the screen can be helpful in re-synching with others during a workout.
Sometimes it's helpful to know when you are halfway through an interval. Since our route is out-and-back, for example, we sometimes need to turn around halfway through a run or walk interval. The Tabata Timer provides a Halfway Beep setting on the Settings screen. Scroll down to the Sounds section and look for the Halfway Beep setting.
