How do we create a more equitable music education in today’s social climate and why is it crucial to a student’s education and growth?
The idea of Eurocentricity was something I found first in other classes, such as history where “World” History classes were built around Europe and other parts of the world were only mentioned in relation to Europe.
I first realized this issue in music classes when a previous Capstone student presented on the lack of female representation in the music we play. Even as an Indian student of music, including Carnatic, I often felt that my cultural music was inferior and that European music was used as the "golden standard" to measure a musician's skill. I knew then that I wanted to explore this issue further, going into the depths of why it’s crucial we reform the curriculum, studying its effect on students with marginalized, intersectional identities, and offering my own solution to this problem.
