Why are there not more Black educators and people of color at conferences?
What can we do to make Black and other underrepresented educators feel welcome in these conference spaces once they get here?
What can we do about it?
As educators who value learning from the experience and ideas of diverse voices, we recognize the importance of creating welcoming spaces that allow ALL people to feel welcomed and valued. By putting equity at the heart of our learning experience we strive to build an inclusive environment for all educators.
We asked conference organizers what their strategies were for recruiting presenters and attendees. We asked if they would partner with us in collecting data to understand which identities are currently in our community, both visible and invisible.
Examine and create learning spaces to be rooted in diversity
Implement strategies to design welcoming spaces for belonging and inclusion
Build a community of educators of color to attend, share and present in these spaces.
Our data collection process was designed not only to help our group see the numbers, but help the participants:
See each other for their identities
Invite participants to self-reflect on their own identity and what race means to them.
See which group may be underrepresented or not represented.
