ARTICLE AND RESEARCH
Gender disparities often emerge subtly in early childhood, where boys and girls share similar rates of participation in education and healthcare. However, the onset of adolescence marks a pivotal shift, particularly for girls. Puberty exposes them to discriminatory practices, leading to heightened risks of child marriage, gender-based violence, and maternal complications.
Education inequalities also exacerbate, with girls receiving less support in pursuing certain fields and facing barriers such as early marriage or pregnancy, leading to high dropout rates, especially in low-income countries. Consequently, twice as many girls globally are excluded from education, employment, or training by late adolescence, perpetuating cycles of poverty across generations. However, gender norms also impact boys, contributing to issues like child labor and gang violence. Addressing gender inequality is crucial for the holistic development of society, recognizing its pervasive effects on every individual.
With over four decades since the adoption of the United Nations' Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), evaluating the efficacy of interventions aimed at realizing its goals becomes imperative. This systematic review synthesizes evidence from 78 studies to assess the effectiveness of interventions targeting gender inequality reduction.
While interventions like education and media initiatives frequently reported improved gender inclusion, half of the interventions did not yield beneficial effects on social change in gender equality. Moreover, interventions predominantly addressing gender mainstreaming and education awareness often showed only partial effectiveness, raising questions about their practical efficacy. The review underscores the need for interventions to address meso and micro-level changes alongside macro-level shifts, emphasizing the importance of considering men's emotional responses in achieving gender equality comprehensively.

Gender stereotypes are preconceived notions or beliefs about the characteristics, roles, and behaviors associated with individuals based on their gender. These stereotypes often reinforce traditional gender norms and expectations, dictating how men and women should behave, think, and express themselves. Gender equality, on the other hand, refers to the principle of treating all individuals, regardless of their gender, with equal rights, opportunities, and respect. It advocates for breaking down gender stereotypes and addressing systemic discrimination to create a society where everyone has the freedom to pursue their goals and aspirations without being limited by their gender.
While some may argue that gender stereotypes serve a purpose in providing a sense of identity or stability, they ultimately contribute to inequality and restrict individuals' freedom to express themselves authentically. In Ukrainian society, as in many others, gender stereotypes persist and often manifest in various aspects of life, including education, employment, and social interactions. However, promoting gender equality benefits everyone by fostering inclusivity, reducing discrimination, and creating a more diverse and vibrant society where individuals can thrive based on their abilities and merits rather than their gender. By challenging gender stereotypes and advocating for equal opportunities, we can create a more equitable and just world for present and future generations.
