This course introduces students to the foundations and the field of museum studies. Issues of theory and practice will be examined as they relate to development, care, and use of museums and systematic collections; museum education; museum administration; exhibition development; research; and evaluation. Students work hands-on with Wofford College's collection of art & artifacts from broad cultural regions by assisting with cataloging, researching objects, and planning educational programming.

This class has certainly broadened my perspective regarding the issues and ongoing practices of museums. Our class discussions have ranged over various topics:
who are museums truly meant for and what is their function?
archival appropriation versus cultural appreciation
how should exhibits be laid out to be more inclusive to the general public?
how can public art be a gateway between museums and community?
artwork integrity and appropriate deaccessioning
In addition to critically thinking about museum organization, research is a vital aspect to this course. Between writing an Exhibition Catalogue Entry & Planning an Educational Program, both of these assignments require the following skills:
explore library & outside academic sources
acquire appropriate resources
have comprehensive knowledge of subject
demonstrate formal formatting
understand audience
creatively implement academic content into a digestible presentation
What was even cooler was sitting down with people whose current jobs involve the content that we learned in class. It is one way to see how knowledge is applied in possible future careers.
