Open a terminal and type sudo dpkg -i . Hit Enter. IF this does not make sense to you - THEN - If the .deb file is in your downloads folder - open your file manager - right lick the downloads folder - and select open in terminal. If this command is NOT available on your version of UBUNTU then use CD Downloads in a terminal window THEN type sudo dpkg -i *.deb Assuming there is only ONE ,deb file in the folder.

In /Downloads I have found a good bundle (one that has the /data file): iscan-bundle-1.0.4.x64.deb.tar.gz

What do I do now? Extract it? if so to where? Using Terminal? Archive Manager? ??

I have extracted it to show the contents: (See attached image )

What is my next step? The .deb files must be installed in this order: 1 /data 2 /core 3 /plugins

Epson L220 Scanner Driver Download 64-bit

The last file in your picture the README.rst file is highlighted. In this file are the installation instructions written by Epson. I'd follow them. These instructions are what I wrote below I just elaborated them a little bit for clarity. For future reference there is always a README file included with Unix/Linux type software that is usually full of information about how to install and troubleshoot and other things. First thing I do after unzipping a new file is look for a README file.

Alternatively you can use the GUI and Archive Manager and extract it in place. Open and extract accepting the defaults should give you a sub-directory in Downloads called: iscan-bundle-1.0.4.x64 or something similar. After Archive Manager finishes check for directory name and go back to the terminal and move into that directory and find if the install.sh is there by the ls command. If so, type in: sudo ./install.sh and go from there.

I was going to suggest "sudo su"

Then untar and cd to the directory

and ./install.sh

So many problems with linux permissions and esoteric fault codes when something goes "squiffy"

Since khunbillmex is working in his home directory he should not need to use sudo as he is the owner of the files and directories in /home/bill. He will need sudo to run the install.sh script as the script will be writing in system directories.

On Simple scan it 'runs' for about a second and then thinks it is done - it doesn't invoke the hardware. On Imagescan it does run but it has to be 'reminded' to Preview. It will then run but does not have any facility for cropping but it can scan and save. I have rebooted and have also removed and reinstalled both Simplescan and Imagescan but the problems I mentioned remain. I think I can live with them.

One thing you might want to look into is specific Ubuntu help forums. Usually someone has a problem exactly like yours. There are many forums and that is where Linux can really shine. TVF are ok but the global platforms have better reach.

So do a search in duckduckgo.com for say: epson l220 printer and scanner on ubuntu 18.04 LTS and you will see a few help forums listed like askubuntu.com. Sometimes people get short of tolerance but claim newbee status and try to make things work and usually people will be helpful.

When searching or asking online always be clear about environment you are using (i.e ubuntu 18.04 LTS etc) and be specific as you can about hardware or software issue. (epson l220 software version 1.0.4)

I started this project out looking on Ubuntu forums but became increasingly frustrated basically by my lack of simple knowledge on Linux terms that is why I posted here on TVF just to see f I could attract some attention - and I sure did and it was just what I was looking for. I'll go back to the Ubuntu forums and look for the fixes to the scanner issues.

Epson L220, without a doubt, is a popular printer among small enterprises, residences, organizations, and schools. However, if you recently purchased an Epson L220 color printer, & facing issues or the printer is not detected, you need the Epson L220 driver. Here we explain the best ways to install the latest Epson l220 driver on Windows 11.

You cannot connect to your Windows operating system without a printer driver. As a result, the printer becomes useless. The best way to fix the issue is to install the latest Epson L220 printer device driver on Windows 10 64-bit.

When it comes to downloading, installing, and updating drivers, Advanced Driver Updater is the best way to get the most recent drivers loaded on your PC. It is a well-known automated driver updater program that can repair all defective or damaged drivers with a few mouse clicks. To get the tool, click the button below:

The Epson L220 printer driver can be downloaded manually and automatically. However, for manual installation, you need technical skills, while to update it automatically, you only need to download and install Advanced Driver Updater.

When I run Epson Scan, which has until today always run without a problem, I do not get a 'preview' window when I click the "preview" button. I am working in "professional" mode and all that appears is a small (like as small as it is possible to be) secondary window saying "EPSON Scan" in the top, and with an "X" button that you can't click.

When it pops up, it's in the bottom LH corner of the screen, hidden behind the start menu button. When you try to click on it, all that happens is that the main Epson Scan window flashes.

I have tried restarting both computer and scanner. I have tried uninstalling, then re-installing EpsonScan.

Does anybody know WTF is going on?

It appears to be able to scan without problem; obviously completely unadjusted scans, but they seem to exist.

The scanner also whirs around like normal when I click the "preview" button, but it just displays this weird little box instead of the proper one.

Edit: I am running windows 7 64 bit, and have used this set up continuously for over a year without fault, until it randomly stopped working today.

This is a screenshot: the little box in the LH corner does not interact normally; you cannot move it and the X does not close it. It is only where it is because I fiddled with the location of the start menu and it jumped out of the way.

Sounds like a weirdly minimized window. Can you hover the mouse over the edges until you see a double arrow and drag it to change the window's size?

If this doesn't work, play around with some keyboard shortcuts to change window size or location, if you want to try to move it away from under the Start button.

So, try this:

- First make sure the window is selected.

- Use keyboard shortcut Alt-Space to open the window's position and size controls. You may not be able to see the controls menu, as it might open off-screen.

- Then use "m" and start moving the window with the keyboard arrow keys. Press Enter to lock the window's new position.

- Then do Alt-Space again and this time press "s" to resize the window, again with the arrow keys, finalize with "Enter" to save the new size. Hopefully your window will "open up" that way again and you can reach its controls.

You might want to practice this on a normal window first to understand how this works.

Hope these shortcuts still work in Windows 7.

I have just tried that: it offered me two options on the alt+space menu which were "move" (greyed out) and "close" which I clicked, and it shut the whole application.

Thanks for your help though, I think that it is an internal software glitch though, so I just wondered if it had happened to anyone else? (and how they got out of it!)

Its really weird that you reinstalled and the preview window is still missing. are you using, or have you recently used, two or more displays? Ive had windows lost off my main desktop after a second monitor was turned off. Have you installed or updated any software lately? when you re installed the scanner, did you use the disk that came with it or a downloaded installer from the epson website?

Yes, I did use two displays - my laptop computer screen and a secondary monitor that actually renders the scans as they truly are.

I used the file from the Epson website.

How did you solve your two-display problem?

ages ago(permalink)

Ah, I tried that, but it doesn't seem to be on display 2; maybe it's locked into an alternative display 2 that I can't access or something. I've never had problems with split display before, if I unplug the monitor, everything just jumps back to display 1...

Thank you for your advice though.

So, finally I got round to phoning Epson Tech Support.

First they gave me this info:

In response to your query, we recommend viewing the following EPSON Knowledge Base article:

 -europe.com/article.aspx?article=1972&p=17

You can also use our Knowledge Base to search for other articles relating to Epson products and services. After accessing the Knowledge Base via the article link above simply click on the ''Search'' tab to search for more articles.

Alternatively, go to www.Epson.co.uk/Support, select your product and then click on Online Support & Manuals.

Browse through the articles or enter your search criteria and then click on the search button. Examples include your product model (e.g. SX400) and any keywords relating to your enquiry, such as ''ink cartridge'', ''driver settings'', ''Epson Scan'' or any error message.

Anywho, I followed the instructions at the end of that link, which completely disinstalled everything - no remainders or little files left.

I then downloaded the driver set for Win7 from Epson, reinstalled and...

Same problem.

I phoned back, and they suggested going into the "Configuration" button (middle, bottom main window on professional mode, as can be seen in the screenshot above) and finding the "Reset All" button. Clicked this, everything went back to native settings and it all worked fine. They didn't know exactly what had caused it, but it's clearly just a glitch. They said that there were no known issues with using dual screens, and that they use them at the Epson offices, and hadn't had an issue.

Anyway, if it happens to you, then you know what to do.
