I strive to create works that will inspire others and forge new paths. I aspire to consistently challenge my skills. I hope to achieve this by seeking, accepting, and surrounding myself with the support of those around me and the challenges that both help and hinder me. I realize that no one ever achieves perfection but I believe that success is achieved by continuing on a forward path regardless of the obstacles and always being ready to learn more.

Joseph Umina (b. 2004) is a versatile percussionist, composer, and guitarist from Milford, Massachusetts. He is currently pursuing a degree in music with a concentration in music business at High Point University, where he continues to refine his craft and expand his musical horizons. His journey into music was deeply inspired by his grandfather, a jazz and classic rock drummer, whose performances sparked Joseph’s early fascination with rhythm and sound. This familial influence led him to begin formal music lessons at the age of 11 and join his school band shortly thereafter. By age 13, he had become a member of the marching band, marking the start of his lifelong dedication to percussion.
During his high school years, Joseph displayed an exceptional curiosity for music theory and notation. He often spent his free time exploring scores and parts he discovered in storage closets, using them as tools to teach himself the art of arranging music. Recognizing his talent and initiative, his instructors supported him by providing guidance in ear training and theoretical studies. This foundation enabled him to dissect musical pieces by ear and transcribe them with precision. Driven by this passion for learning, Joseph also taught himself piano and guitar, with the latter becoming a central instrument in his musical expression. Throughout high school, he collaborated with classmates to perform gigs in Milford and neighboring towns, showcasing his skills as both a performer and arranger.
Upon entering college, Joseph embraced opportunities to grow as a composer under the mentorship of Louis Raymond-Kolker. His compositional studies have allowed him to explore new techniques and experiment with diverse musical styles. In addition to composition, Joseph remains dedicated to percussion, continually seeking challenges that push him beyond his comfort zone. He has actively participated in prestigious clinics and camps such as the SōPercussion Summer Institute and the Neif Norf Summer Festival. His performances include a solo during a masterclass at the UNCSA Percussion Day Clinic, as well as appearances at PASIC 2024 where he competed in both solo and ensemble categories.
Joseph’s commitment to professional development is evident in his active engagement with the broader musical community. He regularly attends workshops and collaborates with peers to enhance his skills across multiple disciplines. His work reflects not only technical proficiency but also a deep passion for innovation and exploration within the field of music.
