"Lenna shows the traditional sounds of Mozambique as something almost magical. It's like a pure sound that suddenly comes to your ears and you have to get used to it - which isn't difficult at all."

NEW ALBUM

released with Da Lata Music, 2024/25
KUMLANGO is the title of the new album by Mozambican singer Lenna Bahule. The artist's nomadic spirit is apparent in this body of work, as it builds bridges across space and time, between cultures and rhythms. Drawing on traditional music from Mozambique and other Afro cultures, but not bound by it, KUMLANGO explores different organic and electronic sound textures to create a unique genre-defying soundscape.

KUMLANGO means “portal” in Yaawo, the language of one of the main ethnic and linguistic groups in the Mozambican province of Niassa. In the album's production, led by Lenna Bahule herself, the traditional sounds of Mozambique and other Afro cultures are sung in different languages such as Xitswa, Chope, Shona, creole from the Island of Reunion and Kannada from India, as well as an authentic nomadic language, the result of Lenna's creativity in inventing musical words.
In this work of art, Lenna Bahule draws inspiration from the universal human experience of the cycles of life. Divided into three EPs, the album celebrates a journey of the soul, from ignorance to enlightenment, from the mundane to the mystical. A journey that connects the past to the present by acknowledging ancestral heritage, the work involved in the quest for fulfilment and, finally, the joy of transcendence. The album is an ode to the search for answers.
