Biography of applicant

Name: Dr. Gary Brennan

Current position: Research fellow, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland

History: I obtained my PhD in the laboratory of Professor David Henshall at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI). My PhD thesis focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of seizure-induced neuronal death. I defended my thesis in 2012 and moved to the lab of Professor Tallie Z. Baram at the University of California-Irvine (UCI). At UCI I was awarded a George Hewitt Foundation postdoctoral fellowship to work on the role of the Neuron Restrictive Silencer Factor (NRSF/REST) in epileptogenesis and the regulatory mechanisms governing the expression of NRSF following an epilepsy-inciting event. In 2016 I received this Marie Sklodowska-Curie individual fellowship which enabled me to return to Europe to rejoin the laboratory of professor Henshall at RCSI. I am currently a research fellow and honorary lecturer in the Department of Physiology and Medical Physics where I work as part of the FutureNeuro SFI centre.
