Once upon a time, Hanuman was relaxing in the forest with his fellow tribe of monkeys. Hanuman's followers respected him and considered Hanuman as their god since he was the son of Vayu, the wind god. A tricky asura wondered into the forest one day and noticed the tribe of monkeys.
He was hungry but he couldn't out right attack the monkeys, since Hanuman was around them all the time. Asura decided to use his head instead of his strength this time to fool the monkeys.
Asura: Attacking them head on is suicide since Hanuman is watching over them... maybe if I disguise myself, I can manage to fool them and enjoy some monkey meat.
The demon disguised himself as a wounded deer near the camp of the monkeys. Hanuman noticed the wounded deer and approached the deer with the other monkeys.
Hanuman: Are you okay, deer? Asked Hanuman.
Deer told Hanuman that he will be fine as long as he can rest here for couple of days. Hanuman felt bad for the deer, so Hanuman came where the deer was resting often to provide the deer with water and food.
Hanuman: Here is some food and water for you, wounded one. I will care for you until you can heal and go back into the forest.
Other monkeys also followed Hanuman to care for the wounded deer. Every time the monkeys headed back to their home, the asura caught and ate the last monkey. Realizing that he was missing some of his followers, Hanuman told the monkeys that he will leave last this time.
Hanuman: Something is off... I will get to the bottom of this!
Hanuman transformed himself as a regular looking monkey and stayed until all the other monkeys left to go home. The deer soon turned into the asura and attacked disguised Hanuman. Hanuman transformed back into his real self and defended against the tricky asura.
Hanuman: You filthy demon! You will not get out here alive! said Hanuman as he struck the asura with his mace, Gada.
Asura: Ahhhhgg! Screamed Asura as he was struck by Hanuman's mace.
The asura fell with one strike from Hanuman. Hanuman went back to the tribes of monkeys and they celebrated the death of the tricky asura. As they were celebrating the victory of Hanuman, a messenger of Sugriva came along requesting Hanuman's presence.
Messenger: Where is Hanuman? I have a urgent message from lord Sugriva!
The monkey's notified Hanuman that the king's messenger was requesting his presence.
Hanuman: What is this urgent message? Asked Hanuman.
The messenger told Hanuman that two unknown armed human was approaching the forest and that lord Sugriva has requested Hanuman to investigate the situation, making sure that they are not a threat to the lord Sugriva.
Hanuman: Hmm... I have a feeling that interesting things will happen in my life if I go and meet these humans. Is this your calling lord Vishnu? Very well... Messenger, I will go and investigate the humans.
Hanuman quickly gathered his belongings and went into the forest to meet the humans that will forever change his life.
Author's Note: This story is based on the tricky wolf and the rats from the Jataka tales. Basic premise of the story is generally the same. Asura is the tricky wolf and the monkeys are the rats. Just like my version of the tale, Wolf gets killed by the leader of the rats. I have twisted the story to fit the Hanuman theme of my portfolio. I also added some dialogue to make the story more vivid and realistic. Towards the end of the story, I added my own twist. I added a scene leading up the when Hanuman meets up with his master, Rama. Since in Ramayana, the backstory of Hanuman meeting up with Rama wasn't really portrayed, I added my own version of the story. It was challenging mixing the stories up but in the end, the overall story came out nice and fun. Hope you guys enjoy it!
