Online Learning
The learning goals of most of my read-aloud consist of finding the main ideas, making personal & real-world connections, and expanding vocabulary.
I chose to communicate in the video as if the kids were in the classroom because a lot of learning styles have transitioned to online and technology forward. Families can play the video of this portion of the read-aloud at home to practice the skills and ideas being taught inside the classroom.
Caregivers, family members, and/or friends can act as the "partner" and simulate meaningful, class-like discussions. I chose to leave the video on a "cliffhanger" to promote critical thinking and suspense about what is going to happen next.
Rationale
My philosophy focuses on the importance of positivity in the classroom and the same idea applies when communicating with the families of your students. In any form of communication sent to the families, there should be positive aspects highlighted throughout. Areas of concern about a single student should never be communicated to every caregiver, only to the caregiver of the child involved. At the end of the day, meeting the needs of your student's families is a very important part of creating positive and healthy relationships.
I find it so very important to keep in mind that every family is unique. To truly understand and connect with the families of your students it is vital to initiate communications from day one; whether it is as early as the summer before the first day of school or at Meet the Teacher night. Putting in the time and effort to reach out to the families shows them your level of care for their children's growth and success in your classroom. I like to use multiple forms of communication to get in contact with my student's families (email, letters to home, classroom app, phone calls, in-person conversations). It is important to keep in mind that some student's caregivers do not have access to technology so physical copies of information are the most beneficial for them. On the other end, some caregivers communicate solely through phone or technology and need the information in a digital form. This is why I choose to provide my student's families with many choices and opportunities to communicate with me.
