Youth Development

Throughout my time in Liberia, I found inspiration in many of my students and other young people who were seeking to better themselves and their communities. Above are some photos from a few activities that sought to help students find and develop their passions:

  • Excel/MS classes: Many youth were acutely aware of the need for computer skills in competing for available jobs. Thanks to computer donations to the local youth center, I was able to work with many students in developing computer literacy and data analysis skills.

  • "Night School" radio program: Easily one of my most enjoyed activities during my time in Liberia, "Night School" (which is still regularly aired) is a program with two missions: showcasing the talents of young Liberians, and demonstrating possible career paths through interviews with local professionals. These talents might include poetry, history, ecological preservation, or even joke-telling. The demonstration of local professionals is an attempt to address the concerns I heard from many students regarding career-seeking after graduation: many students were unsure of how to broach different careers, or were uninformed as to what careers were possible.
