My Grading Philosophy

Grades are a reflection of your learning progress. Each week, you should click on the Grades tab in our Course Navigation Menu and review your scores and my assignment feedback on submitted discussions and assignments. There are no hidden points in this class. You do the work, show that you've learned by meeting the rubric criteria, and you earn points. It's that simple. If something does not seem right, reach out and let me know!

Course Grade Details

Breakdown by Percentage

Course grades will be based on the following:

  • Graded video quizzes: 20%

  • Written quizzes and surveys: 30%

  • Discussion posts and comments: 30%

  • Exams: 20%

Weekly Deadlines

Thursday at 11:59 pm PST

  • The initial post to the weekly discussion is due.

Sunday at 11:59 pm PST

  • All other assignments are due, including quizzes and comments to the weekly discussion.

Late Work Policy

  • All assignments have due dates. These dates are listed in the Calendar and in the Syllabus Course Summary. The goal for due dates is to help you manage your time to complete coursework, and to help me manage my time to provide meaningful feedback.

  • In a perfect world, we will all meet every due date and deadline for school, work, and life, but we know that this is not the case. For this reason, this course has some built-in flexibility on due dates.

    • Quizzes: There is a built-in 48-hour grace period whereby you will still receive full credit for submitting a late quiz. If you need an extension beyond that, you will need to contact me to propose an extended deadline.

    • Exams: There is a built-in 6-hour grace period whereby you will still receive full credit for submitting your exams.

  • Discussions are an exception. It is not in the best interest of the class to accept late discussion posts or replies. It throws off the rhythm of the class and causes confusion if a student submits an initial post after the original deadline. With this in mind, please prioritize discussion board assignments as I will not be able to accept late posts or comments.

Final Course Grades

  • Letter grades are assigned as follows. The interpretation of each grade, with its value in grade points per semester unit, can be found in the Pierce College General Catalog. Borderline grades are considered on an individual basis.

    • A (>90%)

    • B (80-89%)

    • C (70-79%)

    • D (60-69%)

    • F (<60%).
