My level will be part of the universe of The Evil Within. This is a game about a detective who is sent to investigate a massacre at Beacon Mental Hospital. He is then pulled into what seems to be some sort of nightmare and has to survive terrifying creatures and the one who seems to control the STEM environment, Ruvik.
For my own level I'll mostly use the first game as inspiration, but I'll also look at the second game. Both games actually have puzzles you have to solve during the gameplay, but they're usually pretty simple; this is why I'll also look at Resident Evil 2: Remake for puzzle inspiration.
The main character finds themself in a hallway of what appears to be a hospital. There is a door behind them, as well as in front of them and two doors on their sides. It's a section of a bigger level in which the player has to solve a puzzle to be able to proceed to the next section.
Below is a moodboard with my main inspiration for my environment. It features some screenshots of The Evil Within 1 & 2, as well as inspiration for my environment and my puzzles.
Below is my current level flow. Since you're not able to see the descriptions of every entry in it, I'll go over all of these under "Level Layout".
Below is my current level layout. Number 1 is the player; they start at one end of the hallway, looking directly to the other end of it. Number 2 is a trap; as soon as the player walks close, the trap is triggered, preventing the player from reaching the door. Number 3 is the exit, and thus the player's main goal in this scenario. Apart from the traps, the door is also locked, meaning the player will have to find a way to disable the trap, as well as find the key for the door. Number 4 and 5 are small side rooms which contain a total of two puzzles the player has to solve in order to release the trap mechanism. Somewhere in these rooms they can also find the key for the door.
The game starts with an introduction of the location, setting and theme. The player is in the hallway of a hospital at night, in the dark, their only light coming from a few spots on the ceiling. It's definitely a scary environment, which means the main theme is "horror".
The player can walk around and interact with objects with [E]. Upon walking towards the exit, a trap is triggered, meaning the player will have to visit the side rooms to look for a way to disable the trap mechanism.
The first room contains four numbers scattered around the room in a certain order, starting from one point. In the sketch, you can see a 3 on the board, with a V, Roman numeral for 5, on the cracked laptop screen. The player can find a number pad on the desk in the room, in which they have to type the correct code. This will release part of the trap mechanism.
In the second room, the player can find a few tubes with colored liquid. With a pad with buttons, they can change the colors of the tubes; in the room, they can find a color code, which they have to match the tubes with in order to release the other half of the trap mechanism.
After solving both puzzles, the player can safely walk over to the door. Here, they find out it's still locked, and they have to return to the rooms to look for the key. When they have it, they can return to the door, open it, and leave the area. This is how the level ends. The player is rewarded with finally being freed from the claustrophobic environment.
