While the family-firm literature argues that most family businesses are founded with intentions to be family firms (Chua et al., 2004), the entrepreneurship literature treats exit intent as a temporal issue: Founders start to think about their exit once it becomes an imminent decision that is driven, for example, by retirement (Soleimanof et al., 2015). These founders also tend to adapt their preferred exit based on situational characteristics (Wennberg et al., 2010). Even though entrepreneurial exit incorporates the dual nature of exit, including ownership and management transfer,Footnote 1 the entrepreneurial literature has traditionally focused on ownership exit only (Nordqvist et al., 2013). In contrast, the family-business-succession literature tends to focus on management exit (Stamm et al., 2011).
Despite many calls for research on the CE concept in emerging markets (Zahra, Neubaum and Huse, 2000; Zahra, Ireland, Gutierrez and Hitt, 2000; Bruton et al., 2008), our review shows that scholars have not made much progress in this area, especially when we consider the concept at the holistic level, using the three prongs of entrepreneurship (Zahra, 1996). Mathews (2002) offered an alternative model to explain EMFs internationalization by using linkage, leverage and learning model. Yet, no other theories have been developed to examine which aspects of existing theory are valid, which aspects are not and what to do about the latter to enhance our understanding of EMFs (Ramamurti, 2012). Moreover, existing studies are mainly conducted in countries such as China, India, South Africa and Turkey, leaving more of the emerging economies still untested. Our review suggests that there is huge potential in looking at the drivers of CE and the organizational capabilities that contribute to it (CE) within the context of emerging markets.

Over the past two decades, the study of entrepreneurship and its importance to the economy has increased in appeal to academics, practitioners and governments. This study explores entrepreneurship in small island economies within regions based on Total Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) and Established Business Ownership (EBO) as observed in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) dataset. This research uses the pooled regression model to study the impact of TEA and EBO on economic growth. The findings highlight that new venture creation is a driver that improves gross domestic product (GDP); however, there are significant differences across SIDS in the orientation of TEA and EBO that suggest that other contextual issues like culture, education system, and entrepreneurial support elements influence entrepreneurial behaviour across regions as well. The more advanced of these nations like Singapore and Puerto Rico benefit from knowledge networks and scientific mobility, while the smaller economies in the Caribbean and Pacific Region show less openness to pursuing entrepreneurial endeavours. These findings provide a foundation for further research on varying types of combinations of both economic factors and contextual differences that lend to the transitioning process towards an emerging economy.
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a major role in most economies, particularly in developing countries. SMEs account for the majority of businesses worldwide and are important contributors to job creation and global economic development. They represent about 90% of businesses and more than 50% of employment worldwide. Formal SMEs contribute up to 40% of national income (GDP) in emerging economies. These numbers are significantly higher when informal SMEs are included. According to our estimates, 600 million jobs will be needed by 2030 to absorb the growing global workforce, which makes SME development a high priority for many governments around the world. In emerging markets, most formal jobs are generated by SMEs, which create 7 out of 10 jobs. However, access to finance is a key constraint to SME growth, it is the second most cited obstacle facing SMEs to grow their businesses in emerging markets and developing countries.
Self-employment is not synonymous with entrepreneurship. The level of entrepreneurial activity offers information about the dynamics of an economy, while the level of self-employment is not necessarily correlated with economic development. In fact, most economies with high levels of self-employment are less developed. Less developed economies have fewer large firms (which deliver economies of scale and scope) and a greater number of small firms and self-employed individuals (delivering fewer economies of scale and scope). Thus, a high level of self-employment does not necessarily correspond with a high level of entrepreneurial activity.
IntroductionEntrepreneurship may contribute to improving economic growth and development by reducing inequality and exclusion (Apetrei et al., 2019; Auguste, 2021). In many emerging economies, entrepreneurship and SMEs have been shown...
Journal of Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies (JEEE) is the first journal to focus on qualitative and quantitative research in all areas of business, entrepreneurship, marketing, and policies that inhibit or stimulate entrepreneurship, development and sustainability in emerging economies.
The breadth of these contributions can be obscured by a homogenous view of the sector as comprised principally by employer businesses, or technology-intensive firms that grow through external finance. In fact, the full small business sector contains substantial heterogeneity. Several observers have proposed segmentations of the sector that identify the distinctive contributions of different small business segments to the economy (Birch and Medoff, 1994; Mills, 2015; Farrell and Wheat, 2017a). While these segments differ in their contributions to the economy, liquidity and the management of cash flows are core issues to businesses seeking to grow as well as those simply seeking to survive.
A lens on small business cash flows provides a new perspective on the small business sector that more broadly captures its impact on both aggregate and broad-based growth in the U.S. economy. By capturing a wide range of small businesses, our data show the economic contributions of both employer and nonemployer businesses, and shed light on new segments and financial phenomena that might otherwise be difficult to observe. These data paint a picture of a sector that contains an impactful segment of businesses that grow organically, in which businesses manage irregular cash flows with limited cash liquidity, and show promising outcomes in terms of broad-based growth while persistent challenges remain.
Accordingly, policymakers seeking to drive overall economic growth in the sector should consider this level of heterogeneity. Specifically, programs and policies might target the specific financing needs of firms that grow organically in addition to those that grow with external finance. Firms that grow organically generate the majority of revenue, payroll dollars, and an overwhelming majority of aggregate revenue growth during their first few years. These small businesses may have different financing needs as compared to those who leverage substantial amounts of external finance in their first year, including, but not limited to, short-term working capital. These financial solutions may be especially relevant given the prevalence of irregular cash-flow patterns across the sector. Policymakers might use these irregular cash-flow patterns to structure policies and programs that might assist small businesses with cash-flow management, and tailor these policies and programs to the specific challenges faced by different kinds of small businesses.
