Interactive Assessments

Description:

Breakout EDU is a physical game kit and platform where students work together to solve various puzzles to open a locked box, similar to an escape room. You can use Breakout kits in every subject area and grade level. Make sure to scour through the existing games on the site -- you'll find games on geometric shapes, literature, physical education, computer science, and the library, and even team development. Or spend some time to create your own; team up with other teachers to create a multidisciplinary experience. No matter how the game is created, be sure to use the classroom management tools (hint cards, timers, etc.) that Breakout provides to keep students focused on building the critical-thinking and social and emotional skills necessary to solve these complex problems.

Edpuzzle is a web-based interactive video and formative assessment tool that lets users crop existing online videos and add content to target specific learning objectives. Teachers can search the extensive library or upload their own videos to customize them with voice-overs, audio comments, embedded assessment questions, and additional resources. There are also options to choose from the site's curriculum content, assign due dates, and prohibit students from fast-forwarding through videos. Teachers can view students' scores and progress over time as well as the length of time students took to complete an assignment. Data from the embedded quizzes is saved in Edpuzzle's dashboard; however, teachers can easily export and incorporate it into other grade- and course-management systems.

Description:

Kahoot!, a free student-response tool for all platforms, allows teachers to run game-like multiple-choice answer quizzes. Teachers can either create their own quizzes or find, use, and/or remix public quizzes. Questions, along with answer choices, are projected onto a classroom screen while students submit responses using an internet-connected device (computer, tablet, or phone). Questions and polls can contain images and video to help further appeal to all learners. Classic mode and Team mode take place in real time, but Challenge mode enables students to take quizzes within a set time frame, such as for homework. The energized, game-like atmosphere comes from the use of bright colors, suspenseful music, and points awarded for response accuracy and speed. The Team mode mixes things up and allows groups of students to cooperate with each other and compete against other teams. When using the mobile app on a personal device, students can see their past results, pause/resume individual quizzes, and complete homework challenges.

Teachers can upload videos, images, audio clips, and PDF files as well as embed multiple-choice quizzes and polls. Draw Its (students write directly on a slide), collaboration boards, and open-ended questions provide plenty of variety to liven up presentations. Teachers launch the presentation and monitor progress either from the website or through the app. Using the Nearpod app on their devices, students input a code and their names to access content and submit responses.

PlayPosit (formerly known as EduCanon) is a web and Chrome-based interactive video and assessment tool that lets teachers add interactive elements -- such as questions and pauses -- to streaming video content from popular sites such as YouTube and Vimeo, among a number of others. If your school blocks these more popular sites, PlayPosit can also work with sites such as TeacherTube, Shmoop, and even Google Drive videos -- an especially helpful feature if YouTube is blocked at your school. The interface is inviting, limited to three buttons that crop length, build questions (multiple-choice or free-response questions), or finish the "bulb."

Plickers is a rapid-response classroom-polling app that lets teachers use one mobile device to scan paper cards for student responses. There are iOS and Android apps as well as a web interface. Teachers can create single questions on the fly or select a set of questions from their personally curated libraries to add to their queue. After projecting the question on a screen, students hold up their custom response cards, turning the cards in different orientations to indicate their answers -- one side up for A, another side up for B, and so on. The teacher holds up a device such as a phone or a tablet and scans students' responses, which are recorded. Teachers can automatically project responses onto a screen and use the Scoresheet and Question History reports on the website to track students' progress over time. Teachers can organize their questions and mobile uploads into folders, creating handy question queues to save time in future lessons.

Quizizz is a game show-style quiz tool similar to Kahoot!, Quizalize, and Quizlet. It has both a web-based version and iOS, Android, and Chrome apps for students. There's also notable integration with Edmodo, Google Classroom, and Remind. There's no question, however, that Quizizz is heavily influenced by Kahoot! and aims to be even easier to use and more quirky, and on those fronts it succeeds. Teachers create an account, but for students it's optional. Students access a quiz on their device or computer using an access code, and they can see both questions and answers on their screen. There's a searchable database of hundreds of quizzes, and teachers can use those or edit them to meet their needs (including just picking and choosing select questions). When creating their own quizzes (limited to single- or multi-select multiple choice), teachers can add images as well as customize the feedback students see after each question on the quiz. Quizzes can be organized into collections to make it easier to find and assign them. Feedback comes in the form of memes (either premade or custom), which display based on right or wrong answers.

If you need to memorize facts, Quizlet is your tool. Encourage students to use Quizlet on their own time as homework or to create their own custom flash card sets for Quizlet Live competitions. You might also encourage your students to create flash card decks to share with the class; this could be a nice way to help students collaborate as they prepare for a cumulative exam or an AP test.

Socrative is an interactive web-based student-response system (also available through iOS, Android, or Chrome apps) that can help teachers spark conversation and learning through user-created polls and quizzes. Students access questions via a Room code, and answers register immediately on the teacher's computer as the students submit their responses on almost any device. When everyone has responded, teachers can display the results using the "How did we do?" button. Teachers can create quizzes, quick questions, and exit slips that allow for multiple-choice, true/false, and one-sentence-response questions that can be graded with feedback for each student. In addition to those basic assessment strategies, students can team up to play Space Race, a collaborative activity that allows student teams to answer questions as quickly as they can; the teacher can access real-time results of this race as well as determine student teams. At the end, teachers can see quiz data and download it through an Excel sheet or email it for further planning.

World's Worst Pet

Description:

Students follow the story of Snargg, possibly the world's worst pet, as they attempt to get him home. In order to get him there, they must complete a series of vocabulary challenges and watch Snargg get into various antics. The vocabulary words are organized into levels and sets. Students first select a level, and then select a specific set within the level. Each set has a different theme -- for example, students may see words related to music, life cycles, or shopping. According to the developers, World's Worst Pet targets Tier Two and domain-specific words, which simply means it focuses on relevant vocabulary. Kids will find that they can actually put the words they learn to good use as part of their daily lives. Within the app itself, they also have the opportunity to use the words and definitions to play four different games.
