The Plan

Strong teaching begins with a strong plan.

In order to maximize the time you have with your students, its very important to make sure your instruction is working towards a specific goal.

Use the template on the left to plan out the time you have with your students. We've provided an example below.

The rest of this page explores some important parts of lesson planning in more detail.

STEPS TO LESSON PLANNING

1. Choose a topic relevant for your student

2. Identify a standard that applies to that topic

3. Ask yourself: What skills and vocabulary do students need to know in order to achieve this standard?

The answer to this question will help you determine your lesson objectives.

4. Once you know the specific skills you want students to learn, decide on how you will assess their mastery.

Assessment doesn't have to be a test. It's any tool you use to judge if a student has learned what you were teaching. An assessment might be filling out a form, having a conversation on a specific topic, sorting pictures, words, or objects, or answering written questions. It's up to you!

5. Plan activities that build your student's skills towards completing the assessment.
