Before the semester started, I was so confident that English 1102 was going to be a breeze and just like every other English class that I have taken, but that was not the case. Then, when the semester began, I was very nervous. I was nervous that I wouldn’t pass or be successful in this class. Everything in the syllabus, everything Dr. McGinnis informed us that what we would do was like a foreign language to me. I came into this class with no knowledge of how to cite my work or my sources, I didn’t know how to make graphs or charts for the data that I find, I didn’t know how to properly research or find scholarly sources or how to tell if something on the news or the internet was real or fake, I just didn’t know how to be successful and professional while completing work for my audience to read or listen to. I didn’t know how to properly record a podcast, or build a poster or a webtext. This class has allowed me to grow in many different ways than just the coursework. I have also learned how to manage my time and prioritize. One thing this class has helped me with that I can use on a daily basis would be, speaking. During our podcast project, we needed to sound clear and talk to where our audience could understand us. I struggle with that because I always talk so fast. Now, with the knowledge I have learned about public speaking, I can now speak, even during a normal conversation, to where my audience can hear me more clearly. My favorite thing I learned this semester was how the topic we chose at the beginning of the semester tied in with every project we completed and how we just kept building up our information.
The most important takeaway from this class would be, becoming a better presenter and writer. Dr. McGinnis has helped me bring out skills I never knew that I had the ability to do. From here on out, I will take the things I have learned from English 1102 and apply them to future classes, and assignments.
