As high school students, we’re passionate about giving back through volunteer activities, like reading to children in our hometown. Now, we aim to extend our reach by delivering picture books directly to children living in orphanages and disadvantaged communities in the Philippines. Through this project, we hope to share Japanese culture and build meaningful connections with these children. Your support will help cover the costs of our activities and travel expenses. Thank you for helping us make a difference!
We are 17 first-year high school students from English Club in Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture. During junior high school, many of our activities were restricted due to COVID-19, which was a challenging and frustrating time for us. Now, after years of studying English together, we have launched the 'Picture Book Project,' aiming to turn our learning into a real-world contribution that benefits our community and the world. Through this project, we hope to inspire children to enjoy learning English and to share Japanese culture globally.
Our picture books are created with the help of yukAI—an AI application developed by English club—and advanced image-generating AI. Please support our efforts to make a difference!
All the members are challenging to achieve their dream of delivering picture books to Cebu Island!
☆ Our goal is for all members to travel to Cebu, Philippines, to personally deliver two original picture books and a cultural book about Japan to children in poverty-stricken areas of Cebu Island, connecting with them through direct interaction.
☆ We also aim to participate in various community-based volunteer activities, such as educational support and food education for children, including those living in maritime and cemetery slums, mountain villages, and communities around trash heaps. Through these unique volunteer efforts, we hope to make a meaningful impact!
All 17 high school students will travel to the Philippines to deliver original picture books directly to local children and read to them in person. We plan to bring additional books introducing Japanese culture, offering insights into Japanese school life, food, world heritage sites, and more. These cultural lessons will be presented in a fun quiz format, centered around "a day in the life of a Japanese elementary student." By engaging with local children, we aim to create a heartfelt cultural exchange.
We are actively sharing the joy of learning English and building connections with children through community-based initiatives. These include cleanup activities along the Suimon River, participating in city events, and reading our original picture books at local kindergartens and elementary schools. To further our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we also collaborate with Rilful Inc. on the “Marble Crayon Project,” which repurposes discarded crayons into eco-friendly art supplies for local children.
Through these activities, we aim to inspire children to enjoy learning English and to experience Japanese culture in a meaningful way. As high school students, we are excited to expand our abilities to interact with diverse communities and contribute positively to both our local and global society.
The idea for this project began with our desire to apply the English we’ve learned over the years in a meaningful way. In Cebu, Philippines, many children live in trash heaps, slums, and orphanages, where access to education and learning opportunities is limited. When we learned about this, we asked ourselves what we could do to help—and decided to bring hope and joy to these children through picture books.
Our English teacher, Ms. Yuka, supports us wholeheartedly. She believes in the importance of “actually going there, seeing, and experiencing the situation firsthand.” Due to pandemic restrictions, we spent much of junior high limited in what we could do, so she encourages us now to view social issues as our own, to consider how we can make a difference, and to take action—even if it means risking failure. Together with friends who have studied English with us for years, we’re ready to give this project our best effort!
Launch of Picture Book Project
Every Thursday from 8:30 to 10:00 p.m., we meet for our 90-minute picture book class. Despite busy schedules filled with club activities, cram school, and exams, we come together as a team, with each member taking on a unique role within the project. Driven by a strong sense of responsibility and solidarity, everyone is working hard to make this project a success!
Environmental SDGs Ogaki Future Creation Project
We had the honor of participating in the kick-off event for the "Environmental SDGs Ogaki Future Creation Project," attended by the Mayor of Ogaki City, the Gifu Prefectural Board of Education, and fashion designer and model Mira Hasegawa. We also received valuable advice and guidance from Mr. Tanaka of Sun Messe Corporation and Mr. Shimizu of Sinc Corporation, both of whom serve as chairpersons of the project’s executive committee. Their support has been invaluable as we work toward our project goals.
Stand Up Paddling volunteer activities at Suimon River
(published in the Chunichi Newspaper & Gifu Newspaper)
We participated in a cleanup of the Suimon River, which flows through Ogaki City, working alongside local parents and children to pick up trash. Ogaki is renowned as a "water city," with fresh water flowing abundantly throughout the area. However, when we ventured into the river, we were surprised to discover a significant amount of trash. This experience deepened our understanding of environmental issues and strengthened our commitment to keeping our city clean.
Summer Camp & Summer Picture Book Camp
On August 2–3, we participated in the Summer Camp, supporting younger children by serving as role models.
Then, from August 7–9, we dedicated three days to completing two original picture books, working together in a rented conference room. These experiences allowed us to grow as a team and bring our creative vision to life.
Haruto and the Gift of Dreams
(Haruto to Yume no Okurimono)
A heartwarming story about a shy boy who gains confidence and grows through his experiences at English Club.
Journey Across the River of Time
(Toki no kawa wo wattate)
An exciting adventure story that transcends time and space, set in Ogaki, our local town.
Started selling picture books on Amazon 😢 → discontinued
We initially sold our picture books on Amazon but realized the profit margins were too low. To address this, we researched and compared prices online, ultimately printing 200 copies of each book through a more cost-effective company.
However, after reviewing the printed books, we discovered some issues, such as incorrect kimono fitting on the illustrations and blurred background text. We are now working collaboratively to make these corrections and ensure the final versions meet our high standards.
Currently Creating a Book to Introduce Japanese Culture
After realizing that the completed picture book may be a bit too long for reading aloud, we are developing a quiz-style introduction to Japanese culture. This interactive approach will help us engage with children on Cebu Island in a more dynamic way. Our goal is to complete this new book by the end of the year.
First 🔰 crowdfunding challenge
In order to achieve our goal of going to the Philippines with all of our members, we are challenging crowdfunding for the first time, making presentations to solicit sponsoring organizations and companies, and asking for financial support for travel and picture book production costs.
“Autumn Gathering” storytelling exhibition hosted by Ogaki City.
On the same day as the Street Festival, when the street in front of Ogaki Station became a pedestrian zone, we hosted a one-day storytelling event at Ogaki Castle Hall. From morning until evening, 82 parents and children joined us, and we successfully sold 18 picture books.
Ogaki Cable Television
We are preparing to join a class and document the activities for our third book, which focuses on introducing Japanese culture. This will allow us to capture authentic moments and create a meaningful resource that highlights cultural exchange.
Storytelling Activities in Local Schools
During the December Individual Discussion Week (morning classes), we plan to visit kindergartens and elementary schools in Ogaki City to hold storytelling sessions, sharing our picture books with young children.
Collaborative Event at AEON Mall Ogaki
We will partner with Lilifl Inc. to host a coloring activity through the Marble Crayon Project, which recycles broken or shortened crayons into eco-friendly art supplies.
Preparations for Cebu Trip
For many of the 13 participants, this will be their first time traveling abroad. They will take full responsibility for tasks such as obtaining passports and preparing meaningful souvenirs for the children in Cebu.

Our heartfelt desire for this project is to bring smiles to the faces of Filipino children by sharing the joy of English and introducing Japanese culture. Together with friends who have studied English alongside us for many years, we aim to create meaningful connections across cultures.
Having experienced the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic during our junior high school years, we, as high school students, are taking on this challenge with the belief that our actions can make a difference. By stepping out into the world and engaging with others, we hope to contribute not only to our local community but also to a global one.
We would deeply appreciate your support for this project and its mission.
