My groups Umbrella topic for this semester is the Disadvantages of Disabled People. I have chosen to specify my project topic to the Disadvantages of Disabled People in a Social Environment. This topic is very personal for me, as my nephew had a stroke when he was eleven months old. This has resulted in him walking with a limp and wearing a brace on his left leg. I have witnessed the disadvantages of disabled people in his life. I see the stares he gets when walking in a store, I hear his friends asking what is wrong with his leg, and why he “doesn’t walk right.” Of course, the children do not know it makes him feel sad when they ask what is wrong with him, but, if we could take the time to bring awareness to this topic, and inform ourselves and our children on what disabilities are, we could stop the stereotypes that people with disabilities are “different.” The goal for my project is to bring awareness to the mistreatment of people with disabilities.
For years, people with disabilities have been put on the outside of society. In Medieval Times, people with disabilities were often used as “entertainment”. Unfortunately, people with disabilities still, sit on the sidelines. There are 3 different sides to this topic: the people that are unaware of the disadvantages, the people with disabilities, and their family members. This podcast will dive into the different viewpoints of people with disabilities.
