Hello My name is Sa’Mya Ivy and welcome to my podcast. The topic of the day will be christians colonizing the islamic nation. This topic touches home to me since I have an immigrant family. Growing up ive always seen a gap between the two religions but i've never understood it. Today we will be digging a little deeper into our history to better understand this division.
Cultural imperialism is known as having a dominant group as its norm. So for a better understanding christanity is looked at as a norm throughout the united states but islam is not.Cultural imperialism before was mostly linked to military intervention . It wasn't until the 1960s the term cultural imperialism hit scholarly or popular disclosure. The rise and spread of the Roman Empire provides some of the earliest examples of cultural imperialism in the history of Western civilization and highlights both negative and positive aspects of this phenomenon(Tobin). This period is known as the pax romana.
Napoleon’s invasion of egypt in 1798 generally started the modern period (Newby,34). During this time Western colonists started moving to islamic nations such as Asia and Africa. The invasion caused a major decline in muslim policies. These policies included economic and technological issues. As time went on things got a lot worse, many muslims then had to join forces with the ottoman empire in order to be protected from the western colonists. While being in these empires Muslim’s were turned into soldiers or made products for international trade to be apart of the empire. The westeren Europeans took over most manufacturing for the nation which eventually affected the muslims. Muslims felt that the only way to be successful would be if they followed the ways of the Europeans(Newby,56). The European powers replaced the tribal government structure with a new form, and removed religion from its central role in social and economic organizations. In Muslim areas governed by Islamic law (Sharia), the colonial powers were switched to European legal systems(Rotberg,44). As Rotberg explained , many African countries with Muslim populations still have legal systems, with laws governing personal matters based on Islamic law, while most criminal and trade laws are based on European legal systems. The Europeans idea’s started to clash, which caused an outbreak and eventually war(Rotberg52). An Islamic leader by the name of Mohammed Ahmed called for a holy war against the British. In an effort to fight for their country.Mohammed was a very powerful speaker to the lslamic nation, and soon gained the respect of many Sudanese people. Mohammed used Islam to stir up nationalism with his followers, encouraging them to get rid of the British from the territory(Rotberg57).
In todays world The Nation of islam started with the African American Muslims in the 20th centry(Smith). After the death of Elijah Mohammed, which is the founder of islam many people turned to mainstream islam. The religion attracts young black and latinos. Over a period of time Muslims and Christians decided it was time to sit down and have a compromise to finally end the gap between the religions. The Christain- Muslim dialogue has taken many reforms through Christain oganizations, churches, and denominations(Smith). This action was seen as christains taking an olive branch with the muslim community. After the olive branch was made most thought this would seal the deal and the two religions would find a common ground. Shortly after the olive branch was extended the islamic nation turned their back once again. The islamic nation were furious with the 9/11 allegations.During this time the united states had turned their back on the islamic nation to frame them as terrorists. This seemed to have opened a big chapter of their lives. As for months and years muslims were looked at as terrorists The event striked multiple protests and wars against Muslims. During this altercation muslims were looked at as terrorist by the united states. Most americans then formed islamophobia, which is the fear of muslims.Americans even started an industry that sells anti Muslim material that has a gross of 40 million a year. These trains of events is what lead to the islamic nation turning their back on the compromise. The religions since then have been drawn back to square one.
In conclusion Americans are struggling to understand that the Muslims they interact with in businesses, schools, and neighborhoods are different from the Muslim extremists who are calling for even more dire measures against the United States. All muslims are not the same just as we can say all Christains aren't the same. So remember to spread love, peace, and happiness to those of all kinds. This is Sa’Mya Ivy and Thank you for listening to my podcast.
