Pitbull and Chris Brown had "Fun" Making this Video
Synopsis:
The entire music video is inspired by the 80's show Miami Vice. To provide some context, Miami Vice was a crime TV show that followed the story of two undercover policemen. Pitbull and Brown work to incorporate the bright colored suits, beautiful girls, and speedboats that represent what the show was all about. In this specific video, Pitbull and Chris Brown are in Miami on a "business trip". The CEO of the company happens to be a gorgeous woman and her office is located in a mansion where multiple half naked women happen to be relaxing by the pool. Throughout the video, there are many sexual innuendos rather it be women half dressed, camera angles, or sly and suggestive lyrics.
Camera Angles:
This is a perfect example of camera angles used by the dictators in order to captivate the main idea of the song; which is all about portraying women as objects for sex. The camera is rarely ever pointed at the girls' faces but instead at their boobs and butts. This is utter disrespect for women. However, women are supposed to believe that being treated like this means you are beautiful and sexy. Kilbourne's article in reference to an ad states, "The woman is rewarded for her sexuality..." (para 2). This can be very dangerous because when society places all of a woman's worth on her looks and body, it leads to young and teenage girls to suffer from low self-confidence, eating disorders, and depression.
Male Domination:
In this scene shown above, Pitbull is walking around the pool located in the mansion staring and smirking at women in skimpy bathing suits. The women in the video are only there to please him, which is basically degrading a woman to just her body, completely excluding personality and intelligence. Pitbull pretends to smack their butts while raking his eyes up and down their bodies. Besides from the video, many lyrics in the song are extremely suggestive and illustrate male dominance. For example, he says in the video, "Loosen up your body till you come undone..." To me, this comes off almost as a command, not as a question. The idea that a woman is commanded to take off her clothes is unacceptable. Also, another example of a lyric that sounds like a command is in the beginning of the song when he says, "You know the game plan. I gotta have fun with Mami." These lyrics relate to the idea that Kilbourne makes in her article, "Men are also encouraged not to take no for an answer" (para 7). Men are taught to control women in order to get what they want, which in this instance is sex. This music video clearly encourages men to view women as objects and nothing more.
Conclusion:
Pitbull ends up taking the "CEO" back to the mansion where they end up having sex. Throughout this scene he continues to sing repeatedly, "You can bring your friends." She starts dancing for him in lingerie, playing in to the narrative that a woman's only job is to please a man. Pitbull music is known to have many sexual innuendos and most of his music does not respect women, and the song "Fun" is certainly not an exception.
