As a Speaking Fellow, you can support your peers in areas such as classroom presentations and participation, interviews, debates, negotiation, personal narratives, advocacy and activism, and methods for active listening.

At the beginning of this year, I was stuck in bed following a major accident. I had a lot of time to think. There was one problem that I turned over in my mind. For 20 years I had run public speaking courses in New Zealand and tried my best to help people overcome the...

Results:  Patients spoke, uninterrupted, an average of 12 seconds after the resident entered the room. One fourth of the time, residents interrupted patients before they finished speaking. Residents averaged interrupting patients twice during a visit. The time with patients averaged 11 minutes, with the patient speaking for about 4 minutes. Computer use during the office visit accounted for more interruptions than beepers. Verbal interruptions, a knock on the door, beeper interruptions, and computer use all interfered with communication, and increased frequency of interruptions are associated with less favorable patient perceptions of the office visit. Female residents interrupted their patients less often than did male physicians. All residents interrupted female patients more often than male patients. Early and increased interruptions were associated with patients' perception that they should have talked more. Third-year residents interrupted patients less frequently than did first-year residents.

Conclusions:  Numerous interruptions occurred during office visits. Gender was associated with the pattern of interruptions. Physicians frequently interrupted patients before the patients were finished speaking. Computer use also interrupted physician-patient communication.

To speak confidently you need knowledge of vocabulary, sentence structure, pronunciation, and finally listening comprehension to understand the other person so you can reply. At USA Learns you will be practicing all of this in our activities while you are practicing speaking English.

The first step to more confident speaking skills is lots of listening. You need to get the sound of English conversation in your head. In USA Learns, every unit has many short video episodes. You will hear different people speaking English in everyday conversations, exactly the kind of language you need to improve your spoken English. During the unit, you will study the vocabulary and grammar of the language in the videos.

You will begin your practice of speaking English with the key vocabulary words in each unit. Besides learning the meaning, pronunciation, and spelling of the 12 to 20 key words in each unit, you will also practice pronouncing the words by listening, speaking into the microphone, and then comparing your pronunciation with the native speaker's.

You will also practice saying some of the important sentences in the conversations from the videos. Always listen more than once. Listen to the pronunciation of the words and the rhythm of the sentence. When you are ready to try to say the sentence, click the Speak button and speak into your microphone. When you click Playback you will hear the native speaker again and your own voice. Do you like the way you sound? If not, repeat. You can click Speak and make a new recording to improve your English speaking skills as often as you want.

In the 1st English Course, your friendly teacher, Ms. Marquez, will practice speaking English with you. She speaks directly to YOU in the Your Turn activities. She wants you to feel comfortable and speak to her with confidence. She starts with the basics and asks you to introduce yourself and to tell her when your birthday is.

Good communication skills are of crucial importance to your success as a student and a citizen of the world. The College's programs in writing, speaking and foreign language provide you with many opportunities to enhance these skills.

The Public Speaking lab offers assistance to those seeking to develop effective speaking skills across academic disciplines. We are open to all of the UF academic community, including undergraduates, graduate students, TAs, faculty, and UF alumni.

If you're familiar with me or my work, you know that I speak a lot about the issues surrounding the lack of diversity in tech. Sometimes this means sharing articles, social commentary, or giving talks at conferences. Other times this may mean speaking up about the bad behavior of a person or company to draw attention to the issue and educate the community.

I'm one of a growing number of people that are speaking out loudly and publicly about these problems. In doing so, we receive a lot of responses in the form of emails, tweets, and blog post comments concerning both the way we chose to speak up as well as the response they expect us to have to this -- a form of silencing. Comments range from thanks to sympathy to dismissiveness to rudeness to physically threatening. Most incidents that get a reasonable amount of attention will see the whole gamut repeated multiple times, predictably so. As an example, the responses to a set of ignorant tweets made last night by someone are nearly identical to the responses today about a completely separate incident that fell in the same ballpark of poor behavior.

In speaking up about these things, we educate people about the reality of this behavior, why it's not okay, and what it's doing to people. Without people being exposed to this information, they may never realize it's a problem.

For instance, I was speaking at a conference recently and I accidentally said the word "crazy" in a derogatory manner. I stopped myself and said, "I'm sorry, I'm trying to stop using that word. I actually meant 'ridiculous'." It's as simple as that and provides good behavior modeling for bystanders :)

Villanova students have FREE ACCESS to CSP where they will receive expert guidance from English or Communication Studies graduate students on topics including managing speaking anxiety, audience analysis, visual aid design and more. Individuals or small groups are encouraged to connect with us at any stage in their preparation process, from brainstorming for a new assignment to the final dress rehearsal.

Peer consultants in the center work one on one with students, offering suggestions for revision and helping writers and speakers experience their work from a reader or listener's perspective. The consultants can also direct students to resources and answer questions about academic writing or speaking.

All appointments take place in-person in Lathrop 208 unless other arrangements are made in advance. We reserve Zoom appointments strictly for students studying abroad, isolating to prevent contagion, or traveling for school-sponsored events and athletic competitions. To request an online appointment for one of these reasons, email the center at writingspeaking@colgate.edu at least 24 hours before your desired appointment time. Not all consultants on the schedule are equipped to offer Zoom sessions.

I am aware that my account was vague and short. I have been asked about the details (as have colleagues of mine): I have been asked to give the story; to tell people about what has happened. I need to say a few words in response to this request. I need to say a few words about why speaking out matters even when there are things we cannot say, even when there is much that we have to leave unsaid.

I will be saying a few words about confidentiality and archives at our conference Archives Matter tomorrow. When sexual harassment cases are wrapped up by confidentiality, we do not have an archive; we do not have access to papers, materials, which would allow us to know what happened. There are so many missing cases, as I have been involved in this work I have learnt of more and more of them. If we are to create an archive, we have not to follow the directives of an institution. And if we do not follow the directives of an institution we become the cause of the damage we document. The response becomes: damage limitation. If diversity is damage limitation, as I have described in my work on racism, then damage limitation takes the form of controlling speech: trying to stop those who speak about violence from speaking in places where they can be heard.

On January 24-25, 2023, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) is sponsoring a virtual webinar on research directions for interventions to promote language and communication in individuals with autism who are minimally verbal/non-speaking.
