Who we are
English Exam Words AI is developed by Davenport Software Products (“we”, “us”). Questions or requests: support@davenportsoftwareproducts.com.
What this app does
The app helps non-native English speakers study official exam vocabulary (A1–B2), hear words in natural sentences (British & American English), and practice speaking with optional voice recording and playback.
Personal data we collect
• No account required: You can use core features without creating an account.
• Learning progress & activity: studied words, quiz results, favourites, and settings.
• Audio you record: used for practice and comparison. By default, recordings are stored on your device. [If you enable cloud sync/backup, recordings may be stored in our cloud tied to your account.]
• Purchases: subscription status and purchase validation via Apple; we do not receive your full payment card details.
• Diagnostics & usage (Firebase):
– Firebase Analytics collects pseudonymous app usage events (e.g., screens opened, feature engagement), an app-instance identifier, device/OS info, region/locale, and crash/exception counts to help us improve the product.
– Firebase Crashlytics collects crash logs and device/OS details to help us fix stability issues.
• Device basics: app version, device model, OS version, general region (derived from IP) for service operation and fraud prevention.
Data we do not collect
• Precise GPS location • Your contacts • Your photos (unless you choose to share) • Third-party advertising identifiers for ad tracking • We do not sell your data and do not show third-party ads.
How we use your data (purposes)
• Provide core learning features (vocabulary lists, audio playback, search, progress tracking, optional voice practice).
• Generate speech audio by sending text of words/sentences to our text-to-speech provider.
• Validate purchases and manage subscriptions via Apple.
• Improve reliability and security through diagnostics (Firebase Analytics & Crashlytics).
• Respond to support requests, deletion/export requests, and comply with legal obligations.
Legal bases (UK/EU GDPR)
• Performance of a contract: delivering the app/features you request.
• Legitimate interests: security, fraud prevention, product improvement (minimised and balanced).
• Consent: optional analytics and crash diagnostics where required by law; microphone access for voice practice.
• Legal obligation: tax, accounting, and lawful requests.
Sharing and processors
We share data only with service providers acting on our instructions, under data-processing terms:
• Apple (App Store / IAP): subscription status and purchase validation.
• Google Cloud Text-to-Speech: receives the text to synthesise audio plus technical metadata.
• Firebase Analytics (Google): pseudonymous usage analytics as described above (no advertising use by us).
• Firebase Crashlytics (Google): crash logs and diagnostics.
• Cloud hosting/database (e.g., Firebase/Firestore) [if enabled]: stores account/profile and learning progress if you choose to sign in or sync.
International transfers
Where data is processed outside your country (e.g., EU/UK → US), we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent mechanisms.
Retention
• On-device data: remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the app.
• Account/synced data (if enabled): kept while your account is active or until you request deletion, subject to legal requirements.
• Purchases/transactions: retained per tax/accounting laws.
• Firebase Analytics: retained for the period configured in our project (typically up to ~14 months).
• Crashlytics: crash reports retained for a practical period to diagnose and fix issues.
Your choices & controls
• Analytics & Crash reports: You can disable Analytics and/or Crash reports in the app’s Settings → Privacy (if available) or via your device privacy settings. Where consent is required (EU/UK), we only enable Analytics after you consent; you can withdraw consent at any time.
• Microphone: used only for optional voice practice, to be added in version 2. revoke in iOS Settings if desired.
Your rights (EU/UK GDPR)
You may have the right to access, rectify, delete, port, or object to/restrict processing. You can also withdraw consent without affecting prior lawful processing.
