This program offers a unique opportunity for volunteers like you to make a positive impact by helping others improve their English-speaking skills while sharing your own experiences and learning from one another. When you help students speak English with confidence, it increases their probability of being hired by U.S. companies and getting promoted.
No matter your experience level, your contribution is invaluable to us. Our website is designed to provide everything you need to jump right in, including helpful training materials and strategies for impactful conversations with students from all over the world.
What is the purpose of English Chat?
The purpose of English Chat is to empower students in their pursuit of better employment opportunities through casual one-on-one 30-minute conversation sessions with dedicated volunteers like you. As an English Chat volunteer, you'll engage with international BYU-Pathway Worldwide students who are balancing entry-level jobs while focusing on their studies, helping them enhance their professional communication skills.
These sessions create an inviting and low-pressure environment where students can practice their English-speaking skills. Your support is vital as they build confidence and make progress in their language abilities.
Our goal is to ensure that students can express themselves clearly and acquire the level of English that American companies value in a candidate. Join us in making a meaningful difference in their journey!

Meet Our Volunteers!
“After every session, I come away feeling a sense of unity. I’m helping students practice English, but they help me see the good all around the world as we work together. It's such a small time commitment for an incredible reward.”
_ Natalia Ward, English Chat volunteer
I've been volunteering with the English Chat program for many months and simply love my interactions with my chat partners. I love getting to know them, know about their families, daily routines, gardens, water systems, missions, solar setups, seasons, cultures, callings, customs, and food....all while practicing conversational English. The best part for me is when students become repeat chat partners and we get to know each other better, work on preparing for job interviews, softening accents, and pray together. It's probably the most rewarding volunteering activity I have done and is a daily reminder of my rich blessings. There's no lesson preparation required; just chat and help build confidence and testimony.

Meet our Students!
"Some few months on the work study job, I was promoted to assume the role of a Team Lead. In summary, the Team Lead is responsible for holding weekly team meetings, one on one meetings with team members among other things. Even though I was the team lead and the one facilitating these meetings, I hated them. But when the English program was introduced, everything changed. I do not know exactly how, but my confidence and relationship, and more importantly communication with my team changed. This program is a blessing to me."
