Tananarive Due is known for her short stories featuring horror and Afrofutrism. In this most recently published anthology, previous works are paired with brand new stories about monsters, both internally and outwardly physically threatening. Two separate narrators alternate to share these tales of dread.

Epistolary novels are a favorite of mine, and I was excited to see that this was produced by providing a different narrator for each letter writer. Evidence of the Affair follows the story of two marriages irrevocably changed by cheating spouses, and the letters exchanged by all involved. Running at just over an hour, this story packs a powerful punch in a short amount of time.

The Refugees is the second published work of fiction by author Viet Thanh Nguyen, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 2016 for his debut novel, The Sympathizer. It is an assembly of stories about immigration, confronting questions of identity, diaspora, and nostalgia. Each story follows the life of a different character, usually a Vietnamese immigrant in America, through their struggles and successes. Nguyen writes in beautiful, staggering prose, and hearing him read his own work is truly exquisite. His voice perfectly captures the emotion ingrained in his words, while his gentle tone makes the stories approachable to those who may not understand the complexities of being an immigrant.

Revolving around Indian immigrants in America and Americans of Indian descent, the nine stories in Jhumpa Lahiri's Pulitzer Prize-winning Interpreter of Maladies are instantly relatable to anyone who has ever felt like a foreigner at home. Lahiri, author of the acclaimed novel The Namesake, follows the emotional journeys of characters seeking love, belonging, and a sense of identity in a strange land. The result is a passionate, gorgeous collection of stories that, when coupled with Matilda Novak's gentle narration, offers a melodic and emotional tribute to the process of finding familiarity.

The Largesse of the Sea Maiden showcases the very last short stories written by prolific American author and National Book Award winner Denis Johnson. This collection brings together five short stories that, while not connected in plot, are linked by the themes of misconception and identity. Though vastly different in style and tone, each actor highlights his narration of a powerful story with an excellent performance, demonstrating his mastery of the spoken word.

I'm working my way through the HH and sometimes I feel like a break from the slog of the long narrative. Looking for short interesting pieces to interleave between longer books. Ideally ones without too much lore impact though anything goes. Has to be available in audio form though.

I am sure Long Way Down is wonderful as an audio book, especially if read by the author. But I would encourage everyone to pick up the book, because the graphic design is absolutely wonderful, with textured backgrounds and the text as artwork. I remember being absolutely struck by how the design of the book reinforced that feeling of fragmentation.

All of the Ladies No 1 Detective Agency books by Alexander McCall Smith are fabulously done on audio and are not too long. Actually I wish they were a lot longer as the stories and characters are so well done. I listen to books on cd on my commute to and from work. Also the Mrs. Pollifax books by Dorothy Gillman are easy to listen to and a nice light mystery. The Tea Shop mystery series by Laura Childs are nice to listen to and are cozy mysteries. While not short, the Louise Penny, Gamache mystery series, is fabulous to read or listen to. I greatly enjoy the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters but for some the accents and old fashioned speech may be distracting but as someone who has read the books, I appreciate listening to them on cd. And the Pendergast series by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child are fabulous. But not short. 2351a5e196
