Synopsis: For this project I have chosen to analyze and argue rapper Tyga's song and music video, "Taste". In early 2018 Tyga came out with his hit song "Taste" featuring offset. The song essentially is about Tyga showing off his riches and basking in the glory of it all while demeaning women in the process. In his music video he shows off half naked woman while they dance around them. He even features himself above women and towards the end of his video he gets phsycial with their bodies. His attitude towards women in his lyrics suggests his proposed superiority as well.
Sexual Innuendos: Kilbourne once said, "“The way that ads portray bodies-especially woman’s bodies-as objects conditions us to see each other in dehumanizing ways, thus "normalizing" attitudes that can lead to sexual aggression." (Kilbourne 488) I believe Tyga uses women as a sexual representation of gain and superiorty as seen throughout his music video. In this screenshot taken from the music video (figure one), you can see Tyga getting physical with half naked women. Not only that, Tyga is choosing to touch their butts, a place that should be private to women. This music video has millions of views and comments and not one mention how degrading this video (and song) is towards women. Tyga uses women in his music video to further his message across that he has gain. That these women are sexual objects that he deserves and has essentially gained.
Toxic Masculinity: To further analyize, Id like to discuss Tygas attitude and peronsa throughout his music video. Figure two features Tyga posted above a large group of half naked women. "Advertising often encourages women to be attracted to hostile and indifferent men while encouraging boys to become these men.” (Kilbourne 491) I chose this quote because it helps represent the relationship between Tyga and the women in his videos. None of the women appear to be bothered by the way they are being objectified. I believe the corruption of society and media is the reason. With stances, camera angles, male to female ratio, lyrics, and lack of clothing, its clear to see the way he presumes himself to be. His persona screams superiority being surrounded by naked women.
Conclusion: By analyzing the visual ques of a music video we can better discuss and understand the message thats being percieved. In doing so we have unocovered the difficult truth behing Tyga's song and music video "Taste". Tyga uses women as a way of showing off his riches and glory. In his video he is essentially sexually objectifying women, demeaning them for personal gain by showing their bodies off and even getting physical. His perosona throughout the video suggests that he also feels superior towards them and is entitled.
