Hello, my name is Annabell Bowns, and welcome to my podcast. I am a freshman at the College of Coastal Georgia, and this semester my class theme is “confronting oppression.” In Iris Marion Young’s “Five Faces of Oppression,” she talks about the different ways that people or groups of people may feel oppressed. Those different ways are marginalization, exploitation, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. My group and I decided to focus our research on powerlessness in children, specifically the different situations that can make a child feel powerless. My personal topic for this project is childhood sexual assault (CSA) and the long-term effects that it creates. Some of the effects are violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and different mental disorders like anxiety or depression. All of my research comes from academic resources like JSTOR and Galileo, or it was provided to me by Doctor McGinnis. I will also use my own personal experience with this topic as a resource. Childhood sexual assault is far more common than most people think it is. I hope that with this podcast I will help bring more awareness to this issue.
