Aim:
To prepare and assemble a semi-circular fitting joint using mild steel (MS) pieces by performing various fitting operations.
Materials & Tools Required:
Material: Mild Steel (MS) Flat Pieces (Size: 100 mm × 50 mm × 5 mm)
Measuring Tools: Steel rule, Vernier caliper, Divider
Marking Tools: Scriber, Try square, Dot punch
Cutting Tools: Hacksaw, Chisel
Filing Tools: Flat file, Half-round file, Round file
Finishing Tools: Emery paper (if required)
Holding Tools: Bench vice
Inspection Tools: Try square
Operations:
1. Measuring and Marking
2. Hack Sawing (Cutting the Metal Piece)
3. Chiseling (Removing Excess Metal)
4. Filing (Smoothing and Shaping the Surface)
5. Assembly and Inspection
1. Clean the MS pieces with cotton waste and emery paper to remove rust, grease, or dirt. Ensure the surface is smooth before proceeding with marking.
2. Use a steel rule to measure and mark the required dimensions. Set a divider to the required semicircle radius and mark the arc on one of the MS pieces.
3. Use a try square to ensure perpendicularity at the base of the semicircle.
4. Use a dot punch to create small indentations along the marked semicircle for easy cutting.
5. Hold the MS pieces in a bench vice to prevent movement. Use a hacksaw to make rough straight cuts along the curve to remove excess material. Carefully use a chisel to remove smaller sections along the semicircle.
6. Use a half-round file to shape the semicircular edge. If required, use a round file for fine adjustments and smoothness.
7. Place the semicircular cut piece against the corresponding straight piece and check the fit. Use a try square to verify that the semicircle and straight edge align correctly. Re-check the alignment before proceeding.
7. Place both semicircular pieces together to check the accuracy of the V-joint. Ensure that the pieces fit tightly without gaps. Use a try square to check for correct alignment , adjust if needed.
8. In the final process, Use file to smoothen the surface and remove sharp edges.
Use safety gloves and goggles while cutting and filing.
Ensure accurate marking before cutting to avoid material wastage.
Secure the workpiece firmly in a vice while cutting or filing.
Apply uniform pressure while filing to maintain the correct shape.
A semicircular fitting joint is successfully fabricated using MS pieces, maintaining the required accuracy and alignment.
