English 106 - Basic Writing
The English 106 course teaches basic writing conventions in crafting effective sentences, paragraphs, and short essays. It is recommended for individuals who do not feel prepared for the required English Foundations writing course, FDENG 101. While this course counts as three elective credits, it does NOT fulfill the University Foundations writing requirement.
The following ACT or SAT scores are required to qualify to register for ENG 150 Writing and Reasoning Foundations:
An ACT Sub Score of 16 or higher or
If you took the SAT before 2016, an SAT Critical Reading Sub Score of 390 or higher or
If you took the SAT during or after 2016, an SAT Writing and Language Test Score of 23 or higher.
*Note: This is the Test Score, NOT the Section Score.
If students have not achieved the required score on the ACT or SAT, they have two options to qualify themselves to register for ENG 150:
Take English 106 and achieve a grade of C or higher
Take and pass the BYU-Idaho Basic Writing Exam (available through the BYU-Idaho Writing Center).
This classroom gives resources for students who choose to take and pass the BYU-Idaho Basic Writing Exam, which will be linked at the end of this class. Students will have the opportunity to study and practice basic grammar principles that will help them improve their writing.
