Just like the famous saying “Rome is not built in a day”, this decade milestone came after 50 years of indescribable effort and hard work by the founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun. To document this history and ensure its continuation, three new books were published in 2022-2023: Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum 10th Anniversary Illustrated Gazette, Path of Humanistic Buddhism: Historical Records of Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum In Its 10th Anniversary
and The Buddhist Maritime Silk Road - New Media Art Exhibition Catalog. Through these publications, museums across the world, the cultural and educational community are invited to explore the “Humanistic Buddhism” left behind by Venerable Master Hsing Yun.
With museology as the central concept, the Director of the Buddha Museum, Venerable Ru Chang, invited Professor Lee Jui Teng to serve as the chief editor, focusing on four main categories: architecture, collections, operations, and history. Working alongside the editorial team, they meticulously documented the visual and textual aspects of the Buddha Museum's ten-year journey. The museum remains committed to upholding Venerable Master Hsing Yun's five missions and four development goals in Arts and Culture, Motion Pictures, Humanistic Values, and Internationalization. Through its operations and dedication to sustainability, the Buddha Museum continues to thrive on this path.
The project's primary coordinator, Venerable Ru Chang, who serves as the Director of the Buddha Museum, along with Professor Chen Yuh-neu, Vice President of National Cheng Kung University, have assembled a team of five scholars and experts. Their collective research focuses on the profound teachings of Venerable Master Hsing Yun's Humanistic Buddhism and the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order. Through an exploration of historical records, they have compiled a comprehensive book that encompasses five key aspects: history, architecture, arts, museology, and cultural activities. Their goal is to offer a fresh perspective and develop public education programs and services that embody the spirit of Humanistic Buddhism. Ultimately, their efforts aim to establish a museum for the 21st century, reflecting the ever-relevant teachings and principles of Buddhism.
The Buddhist Maritime Silk Road - New Media Art Exhibition
Under the leadership of Venerable Master Ru Chang, the main curator of the Fo Guang Buddha Museum, a dedicated team comprising academic curator Professor Lewis R. Lancaster, artistic curators Professor Jeffrey Shaw, and Professor Sarah Kenderdine collaborated to create an innovative exhibition. Leveraging Professor Lancaster's extensive research on the "Buddhist Maritime Silk Road," they employed New Media Art to digitally preserve and showcase the rich Buddhist cultural heritage. This groundbreaking approach offers visitors from across the globe the opportunity to embark on an immersive journey through the maritime silk road, experiencing it firsthand through captivating 360-degree panoramic visuals and lifelike 3D sculptures.
