Webinar with Jonel Beauvais (Welcome Home Circle; formerly at Seven Dancers Coalition)

Jonel Beauvais discussed how her experience as a circle keeper and witness to another woman’s story of survival of intimate partner violence created a transformative experience for that survivor. Jonel shared how she facilitated a sacred circle that included the supportive presence of men from the community who earlier in their lives, caused harm to women, and are now 100% committed to a healing path in support and respect for women’s power. This ceremonial experience of the men working with Jonel to honor the survivor, was transformatively healing and yielded surprisingly powerful results for all concerned. This workshop outlined how this process unfolded and how we can all channel our creativity, spiritual presence and loving, protective energy for healing. And this presence can bring about amazing spiritual transformation and deep embodied healing for someone who is suffering with trauma and pain.

Webinar with Luz Marquez Benbow (#IamNegrx)

This webinar focused on effective approaches at the intersections of child sexual abuse, gender and race. As a Black Latinx adult survivor of child sexual abuse, incest and rape; Luz Marquez Benbow shard her findings from her Just Beginnings Project - Black Latinidad: Building in Siblinghood to End Child Sexual Abuse. Over the course of 1.5 years, Luz held listening sessions with over 45 Black Latinx adult survivors of child sexual abuse. This session also discussed findings from the listening sessions with adult survivors and healing strategies for Black Latinx survivors.

Webinar with Richard Smith (United for Healing Equity, Common Justice)

Many advocates, social workers, activists, and healers who support underserved victims of violence are also survivors of violence and trauma. Oftentimes these frontline service providers' own self-care and continued healing process is secondary to their commitment for caring and healing others. In some cases, their personal healing is completely forgotten while their experiences of interpersonal trauma are exacerbated by their work with victims.

Virtual teach-in with Andrea Ritchie (Interrupting Criminalization: Research in Action)

In the midst of a national conversation on sexual harassment and assault sparked by #MeToo and the me too movement, one form of sexual violence remains shrouded in silence: when police officers and other law enforcement agents are the perpetrators. Although studies show that sexual violence is the second most frequently reported form of police misconduct after excessive force, it is not the second most frequently talked about, despite the fact that an officer is caught in the act every 5 days. What does sexual violence by police look like? Who do officers target? Most importantly, how can we put a stop to this systemic problem? How can sexual assault and anti-criminalization advocates join forces to create a comprehensive approach to this problem which places survivors at the center?

Attendees learned about the impact and legacies of INCITE! Women, Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming People of Color Against Violence (formerly INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence) on the movement to end sexual violence since their foundational conference, “The Color of Violence: Violence Against Women of Color,” convened in 2000, and the publication of INCITE’s joint statement with Critical Resistance on gender-based violence and the prison-industrial complex. The audience also learned about the complex history of efforts to end sexual violence, including the “carceral creep,” or increasing reliance on the criminal legal system to prevent and respond to violence, and community-centered efforts to prevent and respond to violence outside of the criminal legal system.
