Spix's macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii)- AKA the "Little Blue Macaw".
Current Endangerment status: Extinct in the wild (as of 2019)
Spix's are medium sized parrots, covered in various shades of vibrant blue & blue-grey feather. Males and Females are identical in appearance, although the females tend to be slightly smaller.
Spix’s macaws inhabited a species of tree called “Tabebuia Aurea”, native to the drainage basin of the Rio Sao Francisco in northeastern Brazil. They depended heavily on this tree for nesting, feeding on its seeds and nuts, and roosting.
It is important to protect these birds because of how ecologically valuable they are due to such high full extinction threats and their challenges in reproduction to viable hatchlings. The only known living individuals are all in captive breeding programs today.
Personal interest in the Spix's Macaw: Parrots are known to be some of the smartest, most affectionate animals in the world. Many parrots can have the intelligence of a 3-year-old child- which is extremely smart for such a small animal, and many sub species of parrot can also live up to 80% of a human's lifespan. Growing up with birds has always left me with so much respect for this beautiful species- that deserves the chance to thrive.
