BJ is an intelligent, confident, self-centered college student oblivious to much of the world around her. In her eagerness to land a position as an au pair with a chic Parisian family, she unwittingly agrees to be guided through hell at the recommendation of her French professor. BJ must soon learn to deal not only with the horrific reality of being an au pair, tending to three beastly children and suffering the demands of Madame, their aristocratic and over-bearing mother, but also confront the demented concierge who accosts BJ continually with her insane ramblings of ghoulish figures lurking in the labyrinth of Parisian streets . When BJ's French family leaves the heat and humidity of Paris for the family's "vacation" home in Brittany, BJ is relieved to be rid of the concierge. But in the seeming picturesque French countryside, BJ's exposure to hell becomes more gruesome and she begins to grasp the true meaning of her trip. Guided by Eloise, Madame's cock-eyed, stump-legged sister, BJ is forced out of her bed night after night to walk further and further into the depths of hell. Shaken by macabre visions and losing her grip on her own sanity, BJ must find a way to survive, and to tell the tale.
