I hand built this flower pot in Terracotta clay using the coiling technique and then I shaped the piece on the pottery wheel. As the project moved forward, I decided to add a plate for the flowerpot to rest on. I call this piece New Beginnings because we, have had to find new ways to live as the world made its way through the pandemic. Therefore, I believe new beginnings are coming so when you’re planting flowers in this pot, watching them grow, remember how much you are growing as well. Be proud of yourself and for everything you’ve accomplished in these challenging times.

Need some new mugs for your morning routine? Well, Abby and I made a set of nature inspired mugs using low fire Stoneware clay. We both have a big appreciation for nature so this is where the project started. As a focal point, each mug has a hand built fern at its center. Then, the outside of the mugs were glazed with different greens, yellows, and whites while the interior space was finished with deep forest green color burst glaze. We should say, we decided to make a Silent Auction project because Empty Bowls has given us the opportunity to express our own creativity while also helping the Franklin Food Pantry and our community as well. Finally, helping the pantry is important to us and to EB, so we thoroughly enjoyed our time making this set of mugs, which are food safe and ready to be used!

I began this piece by throwing on the pottery wheel creating a basic cylinder shape in red Terracotta clay. I then used coils to build up the height of the piece as well as the thickness around the top. Used the wheel again for shaping and then created a handle and attached it to the vase after pressing a patterned texture into it. I used the same pattern to handbuild a ring of texture around the center of the piece, as well as pressing the pattern around the bottom of the vase. Finally, I used layers of blue glazes to build up a base color, then added greens to the handle and textured patterns. I finished the piece by sponging on shimmer glazes to add movement and sparkle. This project is food safe and ready to be used! This pitcher was a challenge to make as it is the biggest project I have ever made out of clay. However, I enjoyed every minute of it as I knew it would add to our goal of raising money for the Franklin Food Pantry.

Emma and I began this project in April 2020 before the pandemic began. EB was able to save two of the cups before FHS went fully remote in March. This year, we returned to the project making two additional cups completing the set of four. To make the set we applied the slab technique and then used the pottery wheel carving five lines into each cup. We then glazed the set with several shades of blues, pinks, and whites creating an ocean-like color. In the end, Emma and I believe Empty Bowls is an incredible club and we wanted to create a set of beautiful cups to memorialize our high school years spent helping to raise critical funds for the Franklin Food Pantry

I made two planters out of medium fire clay by first throwing them on the pottery wheel, and then I added surface texture and coils to help the glazes blend in the kiln. I used Olive Stone and Blue Stone glazes mimicking the color of moss and lichen on the surface of the pots. I did this because I wanted to capture the beauty of those organic forms in a more permanent manner. I should say, I continue to support Empty Bowls because I believe in its mission of helping those in need in the community I grew up in. And continuing to be a part of the EB community is very important to me. Now, plant your favorite plants in these pots and watch them flourish!

I decided to make a hanging planter because I like working with soft materials, so I wanted to experiment with mixing macrame and clay together. To begin the project, I coiled a large bowl by hand in red Terracotta clay and added some simple hand-built components on the outside of the bowl. I then glazed the piece by layering stardust and gunmetal together creating a green metallic surface. Finally, I stay connected to The Empty Bowls Club at FHS because the work they do for our local food pantry is so impactful for many people in my community.

Emma and I made a charcuterie board out of slabs of white Stoneware clay and we decorated it with handmade flowers and then added a lace texture to its center. We made this piece because we believe it's something everyone can use. And we enjoyed spending the extra time creating this project because Empty Bowls is important to us. By doing this, we knew we could help EB and the pantry even more. Finally, we are both deeply connected to the Franklin community and we love the idea of helping our neighbors. EB has allowed us to do this work throughout our high school career.

I made animal themed planter pots in Stoneware white clay. These planters have gone through a lot, including a global pandemic. The giraffe was built in 2020 prior to the pandemic. The giraffe has had several issues where rehabilitation was needed. With the help of another club member (Emma Chace), the giraffe has come back to life. I chose another majestic animal to make next. Although the elephant is the newest piece in the series, the time and effort put into this project means a lot to me. These two pieces would be a great addition to any windowsill or countertop. I was inspired to make these pieces after seeing a similar pot online, and I just had to get my hands on some clay to come up with my own unique style.

I made three turtles, two are a set, and one is singular. All three turtles were made out of terracotta clay. I made these pieces because it was unique and something different. I liked the idea of how these pieces can almost be seen multiple times a day, depending on their use. I enjoyed putting time and work into these pieces as it was time to escape from the world and have fun for a good cause. The Empty Bowls Club has truly opened my eyes even more on how important coming together as a community is, to raise money for our community in need.

In this collaboration, myself, Abby, and Emily worked together to create a Trio of Vases. To begin the project, we each hand built a vase then we used the pottery wheel to give the pieces shape and dimension. One of our big goals was making sure the vases were connected in color, shape, and design. Therefore, we used the same stamps, created scalloped rims, and applied identical glaze colors tying the three pieces together. In the end, we feel the rich royal blue glaze on the inside of the vases counter balanced with a glaze called Teal Next Time and Robin’s Egg on the outside create a celebratory feeling. In the end, all three pieces meld together making the set complementary, but not identical.

I graduated from FHS in 2016 and continue to make a piece for the Empty Bowls Silent Auction every year to stay connected to EB and the Franklin community. This year, I had the opportunity to work in the raku process making a piece in the classroom and then raku firing off campus. This process was different from what I had done at FHS as a student. In raku, I love how it took a community of artists to complete the glaze fire and how we each had to work together to run the firing. What came from these efforts is the piece called Copper Pedals that was thrown on the pottery wheel. I then hand built multiple pedal like shapes and placed them on the outside of the piece referencing different textures found in nature.

This tray was constructed in medium fire Laguna clay and was made by hand using a bisque mold. We then applied dried ginkgo and maple leaves creating an impression in the center of the tray. Then, a dowel was used to edge the piece creating a unique border. Finally, a two toned bronze patina glaze and a shino copper glaze were applied to the piece creating a natural finish.

This decorative birdhouse was crafted by hand using medium fire Laguna clay. The glazes used on this piece, called agate and ochre, give the project a distinct natural feel. Finally, the top of the birdhouse was finished with a rawhide hanger.
