Poverty in education is so detrimental back it deprives the children of the resources and opportunities they need to succeed academically. Schools in impoverished areas often lack essential materials, qualified teachers, and extracurricular activities. All of these factors have and continue to impede the learning and development of these children. Additionally, children in poverty are more likely to face health and nutritional issues that affect their ability to concentrate and preform the way they need in order to succussed academically. Another key issue is that the dress the kids face from finical instability further enhances these challenges which inevitably create a cycle of underachievement and limited life aspirations. Addressing poverty within the US education system us crucial for ensuring every child has a fair chance at a brighter future.
Poverty is typically misconstrued with only being a monetary issue for those families that are affected, however poverty can do way more than just cause disparities in pay. Poverty as a whole infiltrate its victims lives and leaves scares in unseen places which go way deeper than just the surface.
The consequences which follow this infiltration are listed below but are not limited to: (2019, November 14)
Health Issues
Homelessness
Anxiety/Depression
Students in K-12 education are immensely impacted by these unseen factors which not only affect their personal lives but also their academic as well, which directly correlates to success in later life (2019, November 14). The three factors listed immensely impact the academic performance of the individuals involved due to increased stressors placed upon them that other may not face to such an extent that impacts their ability to succeed within their schools (2019, November 14).
Students living in poverty often have fewer resources then the typical student above the poverty line which help them to complete their homework, study, or engage in activities that helps equip them for success during the school day. Many families below the poverty line lack access to computers, high-speed internet, and other essential materials that can aid student outside of school. Additionally, the parents of these families often work long hours or multiple jobs meaning they may not have the time to assist their children with their schoolwork. However, the most detrimental loss is the lack of time that these students are faced with. As sad as it is to say typically students that are impoverished do not have the time to sit and try to complete their homework/study, instead they are faced with the overwhelming need to figure out their necessities such as their next meal, place to stay, night of sleep, or job they need to get in order to help support their families (2019, November 14). As shown with all of these factors it is easy to see how poverty not only affect those children that are involved but are completely consumed by it which directly takes over/negatively impacts their academic lives.
You may ask yourself, "well if the kids can't find help at home, I am sure they can get it at school.", but the truth is that is the furthest thing from what's happening. The truth is many high poverty district's resources are largely lacking in comparison to those schools outside of the poverty lines. Almost every state is able to devise their own ways of funding for its schools' districts and education based on the property taxes of that areas. However, this system ends up negatively impacting those living in poverty and the students within those districts because the property taxes are often much lower in high poverty areas meaning these schools are receiving even lower amounts of funding then the typical school (2019, November 14).
