Golf Emperor’ Tiger Woods (49, USA), who finished in last place in the Masters Tournament (total prize money of $20 million), the first major tournament of the men’s golf season, showed his motivation to participate in the remaining three major tournaments.
Woods had one birdie in the final 4th round of the tournament held at Augusta National Golf Club (par 72) in Augusta, Georgia, USA on the 15th (Korean time), but committed 3 bogeys and 1 triple bogey and hit 5 over par 77. .
Woods, who recorded a final total of 304 strokes at 16 over par, ranked 60th, the lowest among the 60 people who made the cut.
304 is the worst score he has recorded in his professional career over the past 30 years. Woods' previous highest score was 302 at the 2015 Memorial Tournament. In 2022, when he was returning from a major car accident in 2021, Woods recorded 301 strokes, or more than 300 strokes, at the Masters for the first time. Previously, Woods had never scored more than 300 strokes in the Masters.
Despite posting his worst score, Woods said he “had a good week” and hinted that he would prepare for the PGA Championship in May, the U.S. Open in June and the Open in July.
He said, “Augusta is a golf course I know well. However, this is not the case at Pinehurst (host of the US Open), Valhalla (PGA Championship), and Troon (Open). “It will be homework for me,” he said. “But these competitions are also included in the plan.”
“I’m going to exercise hard and keep my motor running,” Woods said. “I will continue to move my body, get stronger and move forward,” he said, adding, “I hope the practice time will get longer and longer.”
Woods' score that day was not good, but he looked back and said it was not a game where he had nothing to gain. He said, “It’s been a while since I completed 4 rounds, and I think the 1st and 2nd rounds were good. Unfortunately, the third round, where I shot 10-over-par 82, didn’t go as I wanted.”
He went on to add, “I needed to play like Kim Joo-hyung, who hit 6 under par today, but I failed to do that.”
Next year marks the 30th anniversary of Woods first competing in the Masters as an amateur in 1995. In 1997, Woods participated in the Masters as a rookie on the PGA Tour and won, and wore a green jacket five times in the Masters alone (winning in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2019).
