Memes on social media can carry ageist messages and can elicit reactions that are both emotional and self-evaluative. The present study investigates age-related differences in nine discrete emotions and in the evaluation of when individuals have been or will be their best selves. Participants (n = 360) representing young (m = 26 years), middle-aged (m = 39 years) and older adults (m = 63 years) were randomly assigned to view either non-ageist (animals) or ageist (e.g., incompetent older people) memes. After viewing memes, we assessed nine emotional reactions (i.e., fear, anger, sadness, happiness, anxiety, discomfort, disgust, surprise, enjoyment) and Best Self evaluations. Younger and middle-aged people reported more intense emotional reactions to memes than older people, with the exception that older people reported more discomfort and disgust in response to ageist versus non-ageist memes. Younger adults were less surprised by ageist memes (vs. non-ageist) and for all age groups ageist memes (vs. non-ageist) elicited less happiness and enjoyment and were less likely to be shared. With respect to evaluations of one's Best Self, older individuals were more likely to report being their best selves in the past, while after viewing ageist memes, younger individuals were more likely to report being their best selves in the future. Emotions of disgust and discomfort were related to identifying one's Best Self as further in the past. The current study adds to the literature on the impact of ageism by examining age-related differences in the emotions and self-evaluations experienced when confronted with memes on social media.

It's totally normal to get into periods of life where you're completely emotionally off the rails. I remember being a teenager and feeling on edge literally all the time, and I'm lucky that I've developed a foundation of some emotional stability. Unfortunately, you can't be stable all the time, and my emotions have been all out of sorts the past month. I am literally crying while walking down the street in public, and I'm not ashamed of it anymore. I cannot be in a social situation for a prolonged period of time without starting to look super weepy. I'm a disaster, but I'm doing everything I can to keep myself from emotionally lashing out at everyone around me. Sounds fun, right ladies?

If there's one thing that I know I can do when I'm on the brink of welling up with tears at any moment, it's scrolling through relatable and sad memes that understand exactly what I'm going through. Perhaps that's also what you need.

On November 18th, 2019, Twitter [1] user @fyeahmfabello tweeted, "I want to chat briefly about this text that I received from a friend last week." The message reads, "Do you have the emotional/mental capacity for me to vent about something medical/weight-related for a few minutes?" Within two days, the tweet received more than 17,000 likes and 5,000 retweets (shown below, left).

Following the post, people on the platform began mocking the template. Twitter[3] user @Jess_D_Ripper tweeted a screenshot from the film Midsommar with the template overlaid on top. The tweet received more than 14,000 likes and 2,300 retweets in 24 hours (shown below, left).

I get what they're trying to do. Trying to show someone that you care about whatever they're going through while still saying "I'm sorry but I can't deal with it either". This, however, sounds almost robotic, like a customer support bot. And nobody likes those lousy customer service bots!

In this thought experiment I propose the global increase in such psychological conditions such as depression[i] and political apathy are co-morbid symptoms of a bigger issue. The reasoning behind this is the fact that we cannot all be genetically have become more predisposed to depression, but rather the latter is becoming an ever increasing emotional condition due to an perpetually pervasive apathy that is growing in society. I will argue that we are not born apathetic (except for some sociopaths or narcissists), but rather apathy is an enforced condition, sustained and induced in the individual via external social-enforcers that may even reach the depths of institutionalization for the purpose of maintaining the status-quo where the latter refers to some utopian concept or ideal regarding society. Extending on the theme of memes as vicariously living thoughts[ii] we find in our orders of cognition classes of memes that are akin. Higher order memes one can denote to the class of ideologies and more specifically ascription to utopias, including then also dogmatic religion.

To elucidate my statements let me explain, if language as a whole was a living entity, a cumulative expression of the zeitgeist[iii] these above mentioned higher order memes would be languages personality[iv] since most of language regarding perceptions on life stems from such ideological utopian writings. Consider for example, how the utopian ideology of modernity influenced the way science was and is conducted[v].

Returning to social structures, the latter may also act as physical tools to demotivate non-dominant zeitgeist perceptions, not necessarily on purpose, but more in line with how Kuhn[ix] explains how two opposing paradigms can look both correctly and yet only partially from within their own paradigms at the same phenomenon, but cannot really talk directly to each other. So too perception/utopian or ideologically thinkers will have a hard time in working in, permeating through or eventually changing the structure set by those ideological thinkers who in contemporary settings are the most pervasive inn the zeitgeist. As such those who, for example may be seen as traditional figures of legitimacy by most in society will for those new ideological and utopian thinkers not hold the same legitimacy or even authority. Such individuals may always be ladled difficult or resistant, but they are doing so from a higher moral vantage point. These individuals will never have an easy way to negotiate traditional or rather contemporary social structures, yet they know such structures do change over time.

The report deals with the mechanisms of emotional impact of Internet memes of the thematic group "Vaccination against Covid-19". For the first time, an attempt is being made to analyze the Internet memes of the German community in order to determine the attitude of German citizens to such a socially significant event as vaccination against Covid-19. The authors of the Internet messages focus on the negative manifestations of the vaccination process: refusal of vaccination, criticism of government measures, distrust of the vaccine. The effect of various pragmatically loaded precedent phenomena is considered. The necessity of referring to the historical, cultural and social experience of the nation for decoding the meanings in the considered Internet memes is shown. It is proved that the attitude of German citizens to vaccination against Avid-19 is extremely negative. For the purpose of emotional impact, terrible fragments from the history of the Third Reich are involved.

I abruptly left class for the emergency room. I had spent the first half hour running in and out of class, crippled by nausea and sudden vomiting spells. From bloating to abdominal pain to full-blown nausea spells, three months of symptoms had become unavoidable.

In the meantime, I utilized the wait to scroll through social media. I looked through Tumblr pages and Instagram accounts with thousands of followers, reposts and likes all concerning depression, anxiety, despair. Like other Tumblr-eqsue teens I found the content soothing, at times funny in its relatability. I wiped my cheeks. It felt as if my life had turned into one big meme.

Using humor as a mask, some meme subgenres have evolved as a way to laugh about not-so-funny feelings. Memes, and social media generally, have become a mechanism to cope with mental illness, relying on harsh humor to relate personal emotions. With sensitive issues, though, memes can become a double-edged sword, with sharp comedy bordering between humorous and offensive.

Imagine the Internet as a high school cafeteria. There are distinct groups that form among people who share common interests; the band geeks, the sport freaks, the political student government clan, the academics. Each has their own specific jokes and humor centered around a shared knowledge of a subject. These groups may blur online as the Internet allows for multiple identities, but ultimately the same forms of inclusion and exclusion remain.

Number of users, age and platform style help change the way users engage with memes. Small variations can be seen in spelling, shared images and subject matter, with each social media site catering to a different identity.

Behind every Internet screen and carefully curated meme is a person. Simon Handmaker, a sophomore at DePaul University, started creating memes at age 16. Introduced to memes by a Polish friend, Handmaker originally began making memes centering around medieval Slavic artwork. The duo created a Facebook page dedicated to their products, skyping over artwork and bouncing jokes until reaching the perfect level of comedic ingenuity.

As social media flourishes, memes have become an accessible format to foster intimacy concerning the growing dialogue on mental health. These pages are often relatable to followers and offer a sense of connection for others going through the same problems.

On a Sunday morning in February, Elrose woke up around 9:30 a.m. She had gotten home around 1 a.m. the night before, attending a local DIY music show a friend was performing at. Coming home tired, a little drunk and cold from the February night air, she had slipped into bed without thinking. 152ee80cbc
