WHAT MAKES A GOOD MENTOR?
By definition, a Mentor is "an experienced and trusted adviser". In this case, being a Mentor means you are eager to share your personal experiences to help others begin their careers and gain insights into the events industry. This role is not to make decisions for people, but to help and guide them along the process of making decisions for themselves. A good Mentor should be open, honest, enthusiastic, and respectful.
You should:
Work within an events related role or sector
Have 2+ years of experience
Be passionate about the events industry
Be confident enough to speak publicly and lead groups
Want to help people progress in their careers and be willing to help in any way you can
Be able to commit to 1-hour per month with your Mentee
Roles include:
Arranging 1:1 meetings with your assigned Mentees suited to both schedules and setting out best communication methods
Maintaining a relationship with your Mentee to be open, reliable, and trustworthy
Working towards Mentees achieving their personal and professional goals
Offering support and guidance
Sharing personal experiences from throughout your career
Although things may change, here is a current outline of what the programme will entail:
A full outline of the programme and the terms and conditions will be shared
The programme will begin with a Mentor Preparation Session to help you understand what the programme will include, how Mentees will be preparing, and tips and advice on being a good mentor
You will be introduced to your Mentee via email and it will then be the responsibility of you and your mentee to communicate and arrange your 1:1 sessions going forward. There is a commitment of a minimum of 1-hour per month, and it is decided by both you and your Mentee how you will utilise this time.
You will be invited to join a Networking Group with all Mentees and Mentors to help build on your industry connections and also a Mentor Support Group to seek advice and support from other mentors too
There will be a number of webinars, workshops and networking events throughout the programme for you to get involved in and to help gain as much as possible from the programme
Over the coming weeks, further details on the next Mentor Programme will be confirmed and the website will be updated confirming new application opening dates, application deadlines and programme launch dates for early 2022!
Once applications open, the form will be added below for you to complete. Mentors will be accepted and paired with a mentee based on the details included in the form so it is really important to consider the questions asked and include as much detail as possible.
Only once the deadline for applications ends will all applicants be considered, so you can expect to not hear about your application status until this point. Due to the large number of applicants, unfortunately not everybody can be accepted onto the programme.
If not accepted, you are still able to join the EM Mentoring Networking Group on LinkedIn. This is the chance to connect with other industry professioanls and event management students/graduates. You can join discussions, keep updated on industry news and also attend a number of events which will be shared with the EM Mentoring Network.
Be the first to know when applications open by registering your interest in the form below!
You can also join the EM Mentoring Network Group on LinkedIn and follow the EM Mentoring social channels to keep updated, join events and connect with others! Find the details here.
