Science fiction is a broad umbrella of a term. It is a genre that allows us to explore cultural anxieties and hopes, the evolution of social and political issues, and confront the horrors of existence and annihilation. Plus, it's just a fun place to let the imagination run wild! Where else am I going to write long musings on the incomprehensible nature of time and space, and also have little guys named Malork Nalork running around?
Like most kids, I had a deep, earnest Space Phase when I was about eight/nine years old. I wanted to be an astronaut! The phase ended abruptly when I found out the Sun would die in about six billion years (the existential dread set in early). After that, it took years to rediscover that love for the boundless opportunities and wonder that space and space medica can represent.
My main inspiration was my husband! He works for the post office, and he comes home with all sorts of stories about his day. Postal carriers work through all sorts of weather and terrain, and there's a surprising intricacy to every delivery that those outside the postal service may not realize exists. The career lends itself well to the dangers and complications of space travel!
Read! Read read read. Read stuff you like. Read stuff you don't. Read the classics! Read the back of a cereal box. The more variety you expose yourself to, the stronger your own prose will become. And then, write. Put the pen to the paper. Make words. Make many words! You will be frustrated by many of these words. But--and this is the fun part--you will also find yourself delighted by them.
Well, I certainly think so. But then, I wrote the thing. You'll have to discover for yourself!
Sure! Although I wouldn't consider them YA books.
Yessum! There are lots of LGBTQ+ characters in my stories. Romance, though, is pretty light - everyone is on the clock, after all.
