Hello! My name is Emily Rountree, I am currently in MTH-213, and this is my first portfolio!
So far, I have really liked the class, I have had lots of fun working on different activities with my fellow classmates. I have learned A LOT, I took up through calculus in high school, but I swear I never learned most of the things we have went over in class (at least not this in depth), it has been really nice to kind of go back and relay my mathematical foundation.
I have included information about the different math subjects I have learned; probability, counting methods, polygons, space figures and area and perimeter. As well as some of the academic and emotional struggles of the class, including a mistake I made, a time I showed persistence, a subject I still feel a disequilibrium with, a time I showed a growth mindset, and a time I had fun.
The tips and tricks I have learned about math in this course will most definitely help me as I continue on in my academics/career, after all I have to really know the math to be able to teach it to the little ones. I have definitely started to notice polygons and tessellations in my everyday life more than I did before after taking this course (scavenging for the geometry project definitely helped). I feel like out of everything, what has improved most throughout this course has been my growth mindset. I say this because math has always been really hard for me, I really have to focus and work hard to learn and to do be able to do the work correctly. It is really easy for me to get overwhelmed and discouraged, and in the past, I have let that negativity overcome me a few times. However, I have gotten much better at taking a step back and looking at the problem from a different angle, taking a break when needed, asking for help, and most importantly recognizing that even if my "best" isn't perfect, I have to have grace with myself and acknowledge that all that matters is that I truly gave 100%.
