"Education is the most powerful weapon
which you can use to change the world."
– Nelson Mandela
This quote by Nelson Mandela speaks to the transformative power of education, something I strive to harness every day in the classroom. As an educator, I believe in creating a space where students feel safe, seen, and supported, not just to learn academic content, but to grow into confident, compassionate, and curious individuals.
My approach to teaching is rooted in the belief that learning flourishes when students feel a strong sense of belonging. I aim to build a classroom environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities and every student feels empowered to take part in their own learning journey. Guided by Affirmation Theory and Validation Theory, I intentionally recognize and uplift my students' identities, cultures, and lived experiences to motivate and engage them meaningfully.
Growing up bilingual and bicultural in South San Diego shaped my commitment to inclusivity. As a first-generation Mexican-American, I understand the importance of representation in the classroom. My work with students at Discovery Charter School, TreeTop Tutoring Center, and during my student teaching at McMillin Elementary has deepened my ability to integrate diverse perspectives and materials into my teaching. I draw from Critical Race Theory to guide my efforts in addressing inequity and creating space for all voices to be heard, especially those from marginalized backgrounds.
Of course, teaching is not without its challenges. One ongoing learning curve for me has been managing time and attention across a wide range of student needs. There are moments when I wish I had more hours in the day to give each child what they deserve. But through reflection and experience, I’ve learned that effective classroom management and purposeful planning can help ensure all students receive the support they need to succeed.
Equally important to me is fostering strong relationships with families. I view parents and caregivers as essential partners in a child’s education. Through consistent communication, collaboration, and shared goals, we can create a supportive network that uplifts every learner both in and outside of the classroom.
I also believe in active, hands-on learning that engages students not only intellectually, but physically and emotionally. Whether it’s through movement-based activities like morning yoga, creative projects, or outdoor exploration, I strive to meet students where they are and help them discover the joy of learning. I embrace multiple intelligences and use flexible, differentiated instruction so that each student can experience success in their own way.
Finally, I recognize that teaching is a journey of continuous growth. I am committed to professional development, learning from colleagues, and reflecting on my practice. I believe that by modeling curiosity, resilience, and empathy, I can inspire my students to embrace challenges and see themselves as lifelong learners and change-makers.
