The 1870 map (below) of the central part of East Middlebury shows a thriving community of small businesses and homes.
The village was much smaller in 1857 when the above map was made. The growth of the town in the years following the Civil War attests to the demand for East Middlebury product: lumber, leather, building materials, iron, glass and milled grains.
