Many congratulations on being selected to core/ speciality anaesthetic training and welcome to the East Midlands School of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (EMSIAC). This guide is here to help you settle in.
Whether you are new to Anaesthetics or Intensive Care Medicine, or you are looking to develop your career in the specialty, the East Midlands is the perfect place to train. You'll benefit from a choice of rotations which give you stability, learn from many of the country's leading experts and train in some of the UK's leading facilities.
Your training will be based in busy, city hospitals which offer you a fast-paced and varied environment in which to develop your skills. You'll have access to grant funding opportunities for academic training supported by two of the UK's top 25 universities. And, you'll live and work in a thriving, vibrant region which offers a low cost of living, superb transport links and world class sport, art, music, heritage and countryside.
The AnRo ( Anaesthesia National Recruitment Office) offers a conditional offer letter following acceptance of the post. NHS-E will sponsor a Tier 2 General (Health and care worker visa). You are required to have applied for the visa prior to commencing the post. You will be issued with a fresh BRP for the new visa.

On confirmation of your acceptance of the post, you will be required to fill the Anaesthetist in training registration form to update change of circumstances. You will continue to have access to your current Lifelong Learning Platform.
You will also have to update your responsible officer with the GMC via GMC online. For East Midlands trainees, this is Dr Jonathan Corne.
On acceptance of confirmation of the post, NHS England East Midlands will send you a trainee starter pack which you will be required to fill and send back. You will also be provided access to the Trainee Information System where you will have information about future rotations, ARCP’s etc.
You will be allocated a personal Educational Supervisor and will have regular meetings with them to chart out training objectives.
Your Training Programme Director is responsible for allocating your placements which meets your training needs.

Accomodation
Individual trusts have varying options for hospital accommodation. The details will be provided as a part of the starter information sent out by HR. Please establish contact early as there is limited capacity at individual sites.
Induction
Kindly ensure that you have complied with the pre-induction formalities as detailed by your trust. The HR team will facilitate an appointment with Occupational Health if required. You will have further starter information provided in the local induction program.
EMSAIC will organise a school wide induction day- the next is 9 September 2024 at Nottingham City Hospital, Clinical Education Centre.
Exams/ Educational support
There are formal courses run in both Leicester and Nottingham with support for the both the written and OSCE/viva components. Information will be disseminated via the school email. Contacts and other resources can also be found on the Resources page.
The school runs a mentorship program wherein you would be buddied up with a senior trainee for the duration of training. Kindly do get in touch if this is something you may be interested in.
